I’ve tried staying positive, but the Holiday bowl (also located in SoCal) just got axed like 4 hours before it was supposed to start. Meanwhile, our whole program just spent a whole day elbows deep in Disneyland with more than half a week of activities still to go before the game. With the current guidelines, plus the way covid is currently running rampant through vaccinated individuals and teams, it seems highly unlikely both Utah and tOSU make it to Saturday afternoon unscathed.
Things that might help our odds:
      1. Change the guidelines. No college athletes are being severely affected by this strain (or previous strains, really)
      2. Stop testing asymptomatic individuals
      3. Stay outta Disneyland/major public gatherings until after Saturday

Guessing you haven’t read how testing protocols are happening with the Utes and Ohio State. It will be played.

        What are their protocols?

Also, what’s your connection to Itacoatiara? Amazing area

As I understand it, both teams are only testing symptomatic players and unvaccinated players. Given that Utah is 98% vaxed and Ohio St. is 90% vaxed, I don’t see this game getting canceled for unavailable players.

As for Itocoatiara, I went on a church mission to Manaus. Spent some time there and loved it.

I don’t see this game (or any of the NY6 bowls) cancelled. Too much money is invested in these ones and ESPN will stop at nothing to get them on tv. Not saying I agree with it but my two cents.

Please explain why you don’t agree with ESPN stopping at nothing to ensure the NY6 games are played. I would argue that none of the bowl games should be cancelled and that Covid has been a convenient excuse for most of the programs opting out.

Tort law would like a word.

I am not sure what you are trying to argue. Are you saying that some universities feel that they have been roped into playing post-season games, and they are now trying to find ways to opt-out?

Nope. I’m saying teams like Miami and Virginia had a mass exodus of coaches, transfers, and opt outs and had little incentive to travel and play in a lower tier bowl game can now use a couple of positive Covid cases as the reason for now showing up.

It’s more acceptable to use Covid as the scapegoat instead of blaming a coaching change.

      Among many other factors.

My flight from central Oregon to SFO to Burbank is on United, on December 31. We have the 6:00am flight to SFO, rarely canceled. So we have been watching. This morning that flight was canceled, why “a staffing disruption.” Code for Covid. The kicker is that the flight was canceled because yesterday evening’s flight into my more rural hometown from SFO was canceled. In other words, its the bang on effect. The airline did not have the plane to fly out this morning. If that happens on December 31st when we are scheduled to fly out, it would be a moon shot to make it to Pasadena.

So we are considering cancelling all flights, rental car, but booking a night earlier in the Best Western in Glendale. Driving beginning around noon tomorrow. Its a 14 hour drive in the best of conditions. Right now, 50% of the trip is in snow country, and its snowing tonight and tomorrow. Tomorrow AM we decide, hold ’em or fold ’em.

      Surreal.

I am hoping that the airlines are very intent on getting over the weather and COVID situation from Christmas weekend and get back to what they do. I also have a tight schedule on Friday getting to California and non refundable hotel reservations. We need to get people back to work as soon as their symptoms end if this variant does in fact have the same percent of negative outcomes as the common flu.

      1. NC State should sue UCLA and Chip Kelly, personally.

      2. Handwringing is in Utes fans DNA. I haven’t seen so much anxiety since an Air Force “how are we ever gonna defend the option attack?” week.

To be fair, there were more than a few occasions where Utah appeared to have no idea how to stop Air Force’s option attack.

I remember a 56-49 tennis match where Air Force threw one pass for a 60 yard TD and racked up 600 yards on the ground. Those Dee Dowis years were enough to guarantee that I never assume a service academy is an easy win.

          🤣🤣🤣 I actually love this response!! 👏👏👏

AF scored a TD on a beautiful pass play today.
