It was a tough game to watch and then the rain as well made for an uncomfortable night. After watching the Y play Az. I thought we had some basic points to plan around. Az. is not a good team but exposed the Y’s secondary and stayed in the game. Utah did little to attack that secondary. Also in the game, Hall breaking the pocket to run around provided much needed time to the passing game and also delivered so many first downs. Utah did little to hold the edge and keep Hall in the pocket. The Y’s RB broke contain outside often in both games as well.
Both Utah lines got pushed around however much of that was play calls. The Y involved their LBs in the run blitz much more and was so much more aggressive. Their LBs attacked and ours did not. Like last week, it is not the OL’s job to deal with LBs, play calls deal with blitzing LBs. We did not see fly sweeps and other plays to deal with middle pressure. Rolling out or quicker passes also help deal with LBs crossing the LOS. On defense, we are not generating pressure with 4, we need to mix it up and involve LBs.
We didn’t see a spy on Hall, a team that does will slow the Y’s offense. Possibly it has been decades since Utah had 0 TFLs. Brewer had lots of issues with crowd noise and getting the offense set. I know Whitt wants to redshirt Jackson but can’t we give him some tries in 4 games in the wildcat to see if we want more or let him redshirt? A change up may have helped us.
