since Statehood.  One day, maybe, this state will treat adults like adults and stop trying to demonize alcohol.  Or not

      http://www.sltrib.com/news/4990698-155/zion-curtain-bill-quickly-runs-into

My favorite two parts  HB442 would eliminate the grandfathered protection of restaurants that weren’t required to build Zion Curtains because they were serving alcohol before the requirement was enacted. “We’re saying you need to pick one of these two paths: We either need separate storage and dispensing [a Zion Curtain], or you need to have a buffer zone” of 10 feet from a bar where no children could sit.

That buffer zone is referred to by some as a Zion Moat, a nickname Wilson finds offensive.

memo to Brad Wilson, adults in Utah find it offensive that you and your minions do everything you can to make being an adult difficult here behind the zion curtain.

Neves said restaurant and bar owners have been working for months in “good faith” to find a compromise that prevents overconsumption and underage drinking but also provides a healthy business environment for an industry that provides thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in revenues and taxes for the state and local communities.

“The folks on the ‘other side’ of the table seem to have pounced on this opportunity to rewrite huge sections of Utah code,” he said. “Hence, we take no steps forward and 15 steps back. As written, this language is a threat to the very existence of the hospitality industry in Utah.”

The whole premise to the zion curtain is to prevent overconsumption and underage drinking? The flaw is that some mormons in the legislature think that a young person “seeing” preparation of an alcoholic drink somehow renders that person’s cognitive decision making ability useless for the rest of his/her life? Perhaps they should erect the same zion curtains in ice cream stores? You know, a zion calorie curtain? Surely preventing a young child seeing the Baskin & Robbins server scooping ice cream is a sure-fire way of insuring that child doesn’t lose control and become obese, right?

And someone please tell me this. Is there any data anywhere, any statistics that show implementation of the zion curtain has actually had the impact the law is presumably trying to accomplish? I’m sure overconsumption and underage drinking plummeted since the zion curtains were erected, right?

I’m just impressed you were able to type that without succumbing to fits of hysterical laughter.

The word of wisdom says you can drink beer but says you should NOT eat meat or be fat.

Let’s put one up at Hot Dog on a Stick while we are at it. I can’t control myself when those nice young ladies are making their delicious lemonade.

I’ll give you credit, you certainly do have a singular focus.

That, or your focus on what I post about is singular.

The idea behind the zion curtain is not to entice underage youth to drink, but most likely does just the opposite. Someone needs to drag this state kicking and screaming into the 20th Century.

Give it 20 years for the current “enlightened” to die off and then hopefully the next crop of “enlightened” will use their brains, throw the current “enlighteneds” under the bus and improve things.

I feel like the old white guys in Utah see the impending millennial wave coming, and are are throwing everything at the wall as a last stand of sorts. Salt Lake City is going to look like a different world in twenty years.

I agree with this. It really feels like they see the big changes coming and they are making their last stand before they die and church is completely overhauled.

Its almost comical, until you realize they are playing with people’s lives.

Millenial Wave?  Are you talking about the group of young who were promised Jesus would come back in their lifetimes ushering in the “Millenium”?  Like that when they start dying off in the next 20-40 years that everyone will feel betrayed and lied to and everything will be rethought?  You probably meant something else.

Zion curtain, is that anything like the Iron curtain.  I grew up as a child watching  TV comercials about the Iron curtain and they had me scarred s**tless.

Should I be afraid all over again.    Yes, yes I should.  Anything that takes my freedoms away from me, is worthy of being afraid of.

I say down with the curtain, hell down with all curtains.  Long live the Scotch.

One of the issues with the new legislation is that no establishment would be grandfathered, so if it passes your tavern would have to create the new standoff distance regardless.
