Came by to post the same thing. YEP! That’s great! How will we use him?!?!?
-
BDParticipant
247 suggests some ways he might be used.
The expectation is for Utah to use Johnson in whatever capacity he is needed most, whether that be as a quarterback or as a gadget player on the offense. If Johnson does play quarterback, he will be more than capable of doing so with the glimpses he showed while at Utah and Vandy. He could also be utilized as a pass catcher or maybe even in a wildcat situation. But one thing is certain, new Utah offensive coordinator Jason Beck will do whatever he can to get an athlete of his ability on the field. Johnson himself even said he is open to playing either QB or other positions on the offensive side of the ball.

Glad to have Nate back. Be funny if Tanuvasa transferred back in April as well

Coming back to play the role we wanted him to last year. Glad he’s a Ute again

I’ve been impatiently waiting for an update about Nate. Awesome news!

I think the new offensive direction suits Nate’s abilities and athletic skill set better than Lud’s did. QB, receiver, hybrid RB/Wild Cat, whatever. He’s a nice piece to add back to the mix.

I think our new offense suits his skills. I could see him succeeding here
-

That is exciting! You could always see his speed and athleticism. The fact he is putting on X something besides qb is cool.
Did anyone else notice his pictures are him in drum and feather uniforms? I hope they don’t wear throwbacks as much this year. It might be me but after this season I only want to see throwbacks once or twice a year.

I am pleased Johnson decided to return to Utah. As for me, I hope he is not going to play QB. If he is an emergency QB – great.
I would be fine with him running some wildcat on occasion. However, I hope he is willing to play WR. He has NO future in the NFL as a QB, but if he develops some WR skills, he could possibly play on Sundays.

I’m glad he’s back, but is this really a big deal? I’m glad he’s is showing personal growth, but the chances of him contributing meaningfully are small.
Not poo pooing the player or his return, just seems like this warrants very little celebration.

The Miami UteParticipant
I think it’s a big deal. If you saw Johnson play last season, and I know you did, you saw the most dynamic player wearing an Utah uniform. He just wasn’t used correctly. If Beck uses Johnson in a way that accentuates his positive qualities, he can be a very useful player for Utah. Plus, the fact that he’s already spent two years in Utah should mean that he should fit right in with no adaptation period.
-
chinngiskhaanParticipant
I watched very little Utah football last year. What I saw of Nate was a quarterback that was good in one game and bad in all the rest. He didn’t seem nearly as fast in pads as his 100m time indicated he was. Is that because he was used incorrectly? Possibly. HJe didn’t do anything notable for Vandy either. I like the guy, and I’m glad he’s back, but my expectations will be exceeded if he gets non-garbage time touches.
-
YergensenParticipant
Short answer is yes, Ludwig used NJ incorrectly.
Static pocket, multi read. Should have moved the pocket more. Should have been one read and run. No QB option, all handoffs went to RB. QB designed runs were strictly inside, never attacked the edges with his speed.
It was another instance of Utah QB malpractice. Square peg mashed into round hole.

Ute DubParticipant
You are correct if Utah is running pro style or two TE sets…but the spread option is more wide open and needs speed. Nate Johnson has speed.

Nasty Nate is back!!! Anyone that drops the soap is toast.

It’s great for everyone involved when Johnson is back in action.

As long as Beck is more adept at handling his Johnson than Ludwig was

Nate should have been the starter over Barnes two years ago!
I am unable to root for Texas and Sarkisian anything to do with the tds is out or me!
-
chinngiskhaanParticipant
guys, he’s played on two teams and has done nothing for either one. I’m supposed to believe the problem has been his offensive coaches and not his own talent?
Not buying it.
-
ironman1315Participant
He’s coming in as a WR.
-
chinngiskhaanParticipant
oh, well that makes it all better because he is a proven commodity at WR. /s
-
snorkerelliParticipant
So… what I’m getting after summarizing the above posts is that Beck is likely better at handling his Johnson than Ludwig, Nate’s going to be a receiver, not a giver, unless you drop the soap and the all bets are off because Nate is nasty? What site am I on?
