SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women’s basketball team had a historic night in the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Wednesday night in a 124-78 victory over No. 16 Oklahoma. The 124 points in the contest tied for the most points in school history.

The Utes shot 54.9 percent from the floor, and made 13 three-pointers in the win. Inês Vieira had a career night, grabbing eight rebounds, tying her career-high, and dishing out nine assists, marking a new career high. The point margin between the Utes and the No. 16 Sooners on Wednesday night finalized 46 points, the most in school history against a ranked team. Previously, the record was held during the 2004-05 season when Utah took down No. 20 BYU by 24 points.
The Utes totaled 124 points tying the school record for most points in a game since the 1978-79 season when the Utes defeated Northern Arizona in the Jon M. That was actually pretty fun to watch. #16 OU got beaten like a third wife, losing by 50 (!!!) points. To put that scoring in context, Utah averaged 3.1 points per minute. Utah attempted 82 field goals (over 2 per minute) and shot 55% on them. Utah attempted 40 3s (1 per minute). Incredible stuff.

I really don’t know women’s basketball but is Oklahoma really 16. Did they leave players at home or have a ton of injuries? Seems like a disgrace to lose like that.

Yes, they are/were #16 and have been a really good team over the past two years. Last year they were a 4 seed in the tournament and I don’t believe they graduated anyone. They start 4 seniors, 3 of whom are red-shirt seniors and are all healthy. They do play with a lot of pace, pushing the ball up the floor and firing shots. Utes matched the pace and intensity, were locked in for 40 minutes and just ran them out of the gym. Oklahoma did play BYU yesterday and I’m sure felt the altitude, but those aren’t worth 40+ points.

OU is ranked #16, but early in season so may be a “logo” ranking based on past OU women’s basketball success. They beat BYU in a hard-fought comeback win in Provostan just 30 hours prior. They arguably may have been tired from playing 2 games back-to-back at altitude, but they are young athletes, that should not be an excuse. Maybe Utah was more motivated after blowing a halftime lead in Norman last December to lose to the Sooners.

Not a peep about this historic win for the Utah women’s basketball team in the Deseret News.
