At WR we have Zipperer, Washington, Williams, and a handful of guys I’ve never heard of. At TE we have King, Bentley, Clegg, and some guys I’ve never heard of. We’ve got McNair coming, and one other guy. None of these people have demonstrated anything suggesting they could be more than maybe the #3 target on a good team. I’m not saying they don’t have that ability, or that they won’t develop. I’m just saying they haven’t shown it yet.
So who are we going to throw the ball to? Hopefully we bring in a handful of guys. Anyone know who we are targeting?

RedbloodParticipant
The guys you listed and 3 transfer portal WR and one TE. Lots of WR in the TP.
-
chinngiskhaanParticipant
IOW, you have no clue either.

Williams looks really good. With all the contact (holding) allowed in the Big12 the bigger stronger receivers can get separation easier.

King. I want to see more King

This. I’ve been impressed with his ability to seemingly catch (almost) everything thrown in his direction and wonder why he doesn’t get more targets.
-
NarfUteParticipant
the problem with King is he’s been running the wrong direction for the throws his way… Hopefully that gets corrected, I think he can have a big year

New Mexico’s top receiver is in the portal. Luke Wysong would seem like a real possibility. He has 1 year of eligibility remaining, so going with his NM OC and QB would make sense.

And his WR coach apparently…

WasatchRangerParticipant
He got a crystal ball to Arizona by 247.

I see the downvotes, but no suggestion whatsoever that I have said anything that anyone disagrees with. Classic Utehub. Downvotes instead of critical thinking.

Rick WalkerParticipant
People have said, Williams, King or both guys we’ve seen and clearly have potential. Someone said McClain is back so there’s another solid option if that’s true. Plus we have to trust that the underclassmen will develop like they’re supposed to and maybe we’ll see someone who’s been on the scout team this last year ala Devaughn Vele. Happy now?
-
chinngiskhaanParticipant
I don’t have an issue with you or anyone else that actually attempted to answer the question. My issue is that people often downvote but then don’t bother to contribute to the discussion.
I bring it up as a way to encourage more participation in the discussion.

So if I said we won’t be able to land any WR in the portal so we’re screwed, that would be better? That would be critical thinking?
We’re going to get WR’s from the portal, 11 have listed Utah as offering. None of us know which ones we’ll get but I would guess we get 3. My favorite of those is Javonnie Gibson of Arkansas Pine Bluff as he had 1,200 yards last year. Competition will be tough but we have a lot of spots so…

chinngiskhaanParticipant
Would it be better? Yes. Critical thinking? Maybe.
Thanks for the TP info. Very insightful.

Great question to revisit after the portal closes. I encourage patience.

ZWilliams is legit talent, high 3* and showed it off in small sample this year.
McNair is a high 3* who was well recruited.
Watch highlights of both, they’re good.
You can argue we lack experienced WR and the room isn’t full. However, we have some talent to build around.
Have to keep these guys in the fold and add some guys that Beck likes for his scheme. I like the possibilities here. We could possibly see something new and improved. Will Whitt be all in or in the way?

For us to contend for the B12 championship (and given a typical Utah team that has a good run game + defense), we probably need at least 2,500 passing yards (a little more than 200 yards per game)?
It’d be rare for a freshman to provide any meaningful production / a consistent role on the offense. The only ones I can think of have been slot receivers (Covey, Dixon, Matthews). So I’m not going to assume anything here.
And then it’s just hard to assess the guys we still have on the roster b/c there’s been so few opportunities (particularly for underclassmen) the last two years given our QB situation. Williams and Zipperer both showed flashes this year. They each basically played three games and gave us 30-40 yards per game. Could one of them break out and give us 600+ yards? And the other provide a serviceable 300? Then maybe King, who showed flashes w/ Barnes under center, gives us another 300? These are obviously hopeful maybes that only get us halfway there and we’re still missing a #1 target.
The cupboard is bare. They need to work some magic in the portal and that’s obviously where they seem the most focused. We’ll see what happens. Gotta find at least three guys w/ 600+ yards potential b/c we aren’t sure if we have even one of those on our roster already.
