No one on here knows for sure if Cam will play or not, or maybe more important – how capable is he to play?
Let’s assume for a moment that Cam on game day is at the same level he was for the Oregon game last season and was not able to execute the entire playbook. Would you rather Cam play at 75% or would you rather have Barnes play?
As for me – I think we are better off with Barnes. He will have had a chance to take the QB1 reps and a gameplan will be created for his skillset. I would rather have Barnes going full throttle than a limited Cam Rising. There is no doubt that with Cam’s experience and ability – he will be able to read the defense better and that is important. I am hearing good things about Barnes in camp. Reports indicate that he is throwing the deep ball well.
Barnes did not look great against Penn State. Penn State had a great defense. Oregon’s defense last season was below average for the PAC12 and Cam could not take advantage.
I believe we can win this game with Barnes at QB1. If Cam cannot run the entire playbook, I say get him healthy for conference play. Of course – I want Cam to be ready to play. But, it does not seem likely.
Go Utes!!!

I’d take Cam at 75% over Barnes, but anything below that I’d start to consider the alternative

…provided that the 75% is playing capability and that we aren’t taking increased injury risk.
I would want any increased risk of injury to be sub 10%.

Personally, I hope they don’t play Cam if he is only ‘75%’.
If you are playing hobbled, you tend to compensate with unnatural movements and decisions that open you up to mistakes and injury.
Don’t play him until he is closer to ‘100%’ and in game ready form.

Having the Oregon game in my mind makes me think if Rising can’t escape and make plays with his legs doesn’t matter the percentage. That is the bad moon Rising factor that elevates the whole offense.
I want Johnson to start. I don’t trust Barnes and I believe it is most likely irrational. I want Utah to build for 2024 for a CFP. Breaking in a QB now is what I want.

Eagle, I am with you. I always wanted one of the young guys to be QB2 so we could build for 2024. But, Whitt has made it clear that Barnes is the guy. So, if he starts against Florida, I will be a big Barnes fan. 🙂 I hope to see Johnson in the game 5-10 plays.

Well, it all depends on how Nate does in practice. If he’s not doing as well as Barnes, then he should not start over Barnes. Of course he will have his packages, and hopefully it is more than 1-2 trick plays, especially since Ludwig has had a whole offseason to come up with something. As for Cam, if he cannot escape the pocket and scramble, I don’t want him to play. Let’s say he can come back at 90-100% health for pac 12 play (UCLA). In that case, I’d say start Barnes.

I’d go with Barnes. This is especially due to the potential of Rising re-injuring his knee and essentially saying goodbye to the season.
