It’s not hard to know where my allegiances lie, my icon, my moniker, and I remember graduating with Andre Miller.

At the time I often spoke with a girl who worked in the athletic program and gave me insight into the basketball program.

While Andre Miller was a Prop 48 recruit, he absolutely nailed it at the U. Nobody outworked him on the floor and also in the classroom, he took advantage of every opportunity to use the resources at the U to get his education. Loved hearing that, I’ve been hounding my own kids to use the resources in high school and college. Some just take a bit longer than others.

Alex Jensen was one of the most humble guys I ever met. My wife was working in Provo at the time and one of the BYU cheerleaders went to her salon. She mentioned she wanted to meet Alex and go on a date. My wife made me swore to talk to him if I saw him and pass on contact information. I ran into Alex one day on campus and awkwardly told him the story. He said, “You must mean Drew or Trace, or somebody else on the team, not me.” Alex was one of the most humble guys. I remember hearing about team members who’d heard from Majerus what a great player he was before his mission. And if I recall correctly his teammates absolutely loved him. Nobody out hustled Alex, he was always giving 150% diving for balls, doing the dirty work and playing tough defense. Those teams were full of Josh Grants. And as we know Maji could perform magic with the Josh Grant’s of the basketball world. Josh Grant in the NCAA tourney is what got me interested in Utah basketball, and to eventually go to the U.

I met Josh at a Rockies game a few years back. Majerus’ players were all in, and I hope it is a return to the glory days of Utah basketball. So excited if this happens as predicted.

If I have one concern, it is his humility. Maybe in the NIL era, that actually will play better. But it certainly seems like many successful NCAA coaches have pretty big egos, at least in the past. That said, I see a good number of successful coaches at the NBA level that seem more quiet and humble. From my perspective, this is the difference between treating players as kids who need structure and discipline versus treating them like paid professionals that need to be held accountable for doing the job they are paid to do.

I believe that going forward, it will be have to be an interesting blend of both at the NCAA level.

We need to tie into the Maji’s magic. One of his former students fits the bill perfectly. #TeamAlex

Josh and I went to high school together. I waited in the lunch line with him many a time. He wouldn’t remember me.
