ParticipantUtah did really well this year in-state. It is not always easy to keep local kids at home. Some see the merits of staying close to home and playing in front of family and friends–the home town hero. But others want to leave the nest, regardless of how nice the nest; they get starry-eyed. Interesting to have seen some of those latter types transferring back in recent years.
If you want to see an interesting list, check out where the top 25 California recruits from this year signed:

Of the top 25 recruits, only 1 (and maybe another) signed with an in-state school. That is nuts. I do not see how Helton still has a job–USC should have its pick of these recruits. Although in-state recruits, California, unlike Utah, is big enough that staying in-state can still feel like you are getting away from the nest.

ParticipantContinued speculation about Helton’s job status is one reason their recruiting is down. And long may it continue.

ParticipantUrban also gave them the turn and push. I think more than once.

MemberIt’s an indictment on the PAC12 – everyone is going to the SEC

ParticipantWell, if by “everyone,” you mean 4 of the top 25 recruits in California, then yes, everyone is going to the SEC.
Most of them are staying in the Pac12 (appx. 14 of the 25), along with some headed to the Big10.

ParticipantJust to add to that, here are the top recruits from Arizona.
Only 1 of the top 20 signed in-state. There are some great recruits in that class. Herm is known as a star recruiter (and ASU had a great class)…but he got destroyed in his own backyard.

ParticipantThis was within the last couple of years, and I can’t recall the kid, but one recruit from CA said he was leaving the PAC 12 footprint because of the poor officiating. Not having a team in the playoff has to hurt too.
Used to be that USC was the national team taking 5 star guys like Joe McKnight from the SEC. Now it’s the reverse.

ParticipantUSC’s class is absolutely grisly. No 5 stars, and one 4 star. Average rating beneath ours. That really should never happen for them. Never.
