I’ve been trying to access Twitter throughout the day, and it’s been down. I finally googled it, and saw that a massive cyberattack took out a good chunk of major sites across the country. Why is this not bigger news right now? I don’t believe we’ve seen an attack on this scale before. It’s a travesty that the US budget for cybersecurity is only $14 billion (increasing to $19 next year), and I’m afraid we will see more of these in the future that are far more insidious (although this one may prove to be terrible if private user information has been compromised).

The cyaberattackers targeted all the big ones: Twitter, Netflix, UteFans.net…

That’s funny, but they hit more than just social networking sites, and nearly every one of these sites has private information including credit cards and/or social security numbers:

DDoS isn’t an attempt to get to credit card numbers, fortunately.

Are we sure that’s what it is or is it possible they’re saying that right now so people don’t flip out? Honest question, I’m as ignorant as a newborn on this stuff.

Good question. They’ve published it as a DDoS so others can fight it. I could see them trying to mislead, but I’m not sure what purpose it would serve. The symptoms of non-response are in line with a DDoS.

Either it’s exactly what they said or this is step one in taking over and regulating the Internet to prevent free speech that “they” don’t like.
I’m leaning towards the former but who knows?

October & November are revolution season, but we’re only at 99 years since the Bolsheviks ganked Russia, and it seems 100 year anniversary would be the more likely time for historical correspondence. However, the pump is certainly primed here right now.

It was a lot more than just that. Did you not see the article or the list posted?
