It was curious @OnlyU mentioned that week 1 of camp Cam and Kuithe didn’t scrimmage. why not? Are they still adjusting???

week 1 is for the bottom of the roster to see if any have improved enough since spring to get more reps. as camp progresses, the two deep will get a higher % of reps as they move to game planning.
Rising and Kuithe are known quantities so the injury risk of live contact needs to be balanced with the need to build continuity. When you’re basing your whole season on a couple of guys who haven’t played in 18 or 24 months, you don’t risk them unnecessarily in practice. Better to get them enough reps to be comfortable while devoting time to make sure their backups are ready to step in.

That makes perfect sense. After all, if some guy has improved substantially since spring, you’d ideally like to know early on in fall camp.

OnlyU is the best person to answer this but what I was told (second hand) was two reasons – biggest one was that they know what they have with the two of them and they particularly wanted to see how the other quarterbacks were doing; the second has to do with a program-level initiative to make sure the players sustain less injury in training camp. Last year, many of the players affected by nagging injuries experienced the first of them in training camp. It was determined that number of days in a row that they did contact practices may have been a factor. I think most of us saw Kyle’s breakdown at the beginning of camp that the U was moving to an NFL model where contact practices would be spaced out.
I hope it works. Coach Scalley has emphasized how important being physical – specifically tackling live, is for the defense. He never wants to practice like they did for the Covid season and to a certain extent the next season. I don’t mean to say that he is contrary to the practice schedule but it seemed like an important perspective and the U is trying to find a balance.

Cam practiced all spring. Just didn’t get hit.

You can watch the spring game on Youtube.
Both looked very good. Rising has such a great pocket presence and scans the field so well.

2008 National ChampParticipant
spring games where a QB knows he won’t get hit can only tell you so much. Brewer completed something like 264 throws w/o an incompletion a couple of spring games ago. But if you actually watched the game, he would have gotten hit on close to half of them if he’d been live.
Rising did what a 7th year QB should have done against a defense only running cover 2. The important thing was that he didn’t look hindered in his movements or his throwing motion.

Agreed. Nobody can predict How he’ll respond to getting hit.
In terms of watching him run, read through a defense and throwing mechanics… It was valuable.
That’s pretty much all anyone could observe at this point.

As long as he doesn’t break anything, I feel like at this point in Cam’s career we know how he’ll respond to getting hit (insert image here of Cam’s helmet flying off at the USC championship game, and 2nd image of the final score).
