ParticipantArticle I read said he was focused on getting his associates.

ParticipantSurprises me that a lot of Ute fans are on board with bringing that entitled, pompous zoob [explicit] to Salt Lake City. Is The University of Utah becoming a ‘reform school?’

ParticipantWe’re a school that has to compete with USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington for recruits. We’re not paying players and the state of Utah doesn’t exactly scream “fun for college kids”. Are you saying we shouldn’t take any college kids that may make some college kid mistakes?
He’s a talented player who made some stupid decisions. You act like he murdered someone.

ParticipantI don’t think Bernard has demonstrated much other than what he wants for himself. I hope he has worked through his problems though.

ParticipantWhat makes you say this?
The work he put in to go from 2 star/3 star player to NFL prospect?
Taking the fall for a teammate so the teammate’s draft stock wouldn’t be hurt?
Getting screwed over by Kalani so he couldn’t transfer, them working his butt off to get his degree so he can play again?
He was arrested for suspicion of DUI. What’s come of that?
Let’s not go overboard with the hysteria here.

ParticipantUtah:
Well if he “murdered” somebody, we wouldn’t even be having this discussion to begin with. Maybe something about this kid didn’t sit right with me after watching the video? People make mistakes all the time (Carrington, Domo) but there’s a major character flaw with this kid. Hope I’m wrong.

ParticipantYeah where is the hysteria in our disagreement with taking this kid on? Whitt hasnt exactly reformed all of the kids he does have a pretty good record with some. I just HOPE Bernard has changed and is willing to put in the work.

ParticipantThere were plenty of posts about Carrington coming to Utah negatively. Remember them well. My thought was that Kyle Whittingham isn’t stupid and he knows a hell of a lot more about this scene than I do. Sure, not all of the risks work out, but something I can do is look at production on the field – And Bernard can ball big time. Call it a cop out, but I’ll leave it to Whitt to decide the risk factor involved.

KeymasterPardon my ignorance, but I just don’t pay attention to what zoobs do. What did this Bernard guy do?

ParticipantWhitt has a great track record of reforming players with past issues. Carrington’s past issues were worse than Bernard’s and he ended up being great here at Utah and will play in the NFL. If Whitt is willing to give Bernard a chance, then so am I.
As others have mentioned, 4- and 5-star kids aren’t lining up to attend Utah, so when a player as talented as Bernard wants to come here, you give him a chance.

ParticipantAnyone who was ok with Carrington has no moral high ground against Bernard. I agree with your post.
-
EagleMountainUte
ParticipantMoral high ground isn’t the reason it is how he was in all of those situations. Maybe I was blissfully ignorant of Carringtons indiscretions. I know he screwed over his team several times.

ParticipantI think it says a lot to The coaching staffs character to give second chances to these players.
