New Mexico had a decent offense this year. Maybe he could work out.

OC (from ESPN700) has been bringing up his name all week.

#4 total offense for 2024. Just behind Miami and Ole Miss. #5 rushing offense. A spot in front of Boise State and 2200 yard rusher and possible Heisman winner Ashton Jeanty. The #15 red zone offense. Just behind Miami. Named to the Frank Broyles Award, which honors college football’s top assistant coach.

I’ll withhold too much judgement as I can’t speak to what he’ll do with Utah’s players or what the scheme is. But, from an optics perspective, I’d say this is a pretty uninspiring, conservative decision. Of course the guy has just followed Bronco around and has ties to the state, I’m sure Whitt heavily valued whatever input Bronco would have shared on him.

Certainly not a sexy hire and screams Whitt is still in the driver’s seat. Really would have preferred someone from outside the Utah/BYU footprint.

Unsure if there is a connection, but Beck and Morgan are about the same age, and both played around the same time. I wouldn’t be shocked if Morgan and Jason were friends before all this.

It was confirmed in some reports that Morgan and Jason are good friends.

And Jason’s offense surpasses “decent” by miles.

Ha ha. None of this matters. Whittingham is probably coming back. Which means any offensive coordinator will be neutered and unable to fully establish their offense.

Great… 5-7 in the Mountain West, I’m ECSTATIC! So, what? 4-8 in the Big12? I’m done being optimistic until I see some actual progress…

I also am withholding optimism until I see how he works out at Utah.

OTOH, it’s hard to pin the 5-7 record on Beck when the defense was giving up 38 points per game. There were only four worse scoring defenses in FBS.

Utah had a couple of common opponents with UNM this year. Lobos scored 39 at Arizona (Utah 10) and lost because their defense gave up 61. 50 points at Utah State (Utah 38) and won, despite their defense giving up 45.

Not the sexy big name hire many Ute fans wanted, but might be a good pick anyway.

Yes, it might be great, but it also might be terrible. My biggest concern is that it’s probably not a hire that will get recruits excited.

I didn’t need a sexy hire. I wanted a complete overhaul of the offense starting with the staff and ending with the philosophy and got none of it. Apparently the only thing “plug and play” is coaches from Whitt’s limited rolodex.

I can’t even be disappointed at this point since Whitt staying and doing what he’s been doing for his whole career was the most obvious thing ever. I don’t even need to see the full roster or do a deep dive on the schedule to say with 90% certainty Utah will put up a season within one standard deviation of Whitt’s usual 8-4 season. The posiUtes will buy in to the coachspeak and lather themselves up until 11-1 with a bye in the playoff becomes an absolute certainty in their minds. And the calls to “Fire Whitt” or “Promote Scalley” will start again at the first sign of adversity.

Whitt’s career is the football version of NCIS. The lead guy is cool, the formula doesn’t change, the sub characters change but just play versions of what they replaced. The plots don’t change from week to week or year to year. It’s a good show, not a great one, but good enough that you don’t see what else is on during the same timeslot because it might be worse. Because you’ve watched the show for over 20 years and while it’s rarely challenged you, it rarely disappoints either.

It has all the nutritional content and lack of pizazz as a ricecake. And it doesn’t matter what toppings you try to put on it to give it flavor and make it more palatable, it still tastes like a ricecake. I’m tired of being fed ricecake and told it’s filet mignon, that there are starving kids in Africa who would beg to eat ricecake every meal, that ricecake is the best I can ever hope for, or that if we just experiment with the toppings a little more if won’t taste like an effing ricecake.

After 36 years of being a Utah football fan, apathy has finally set in. I’m neither excited nor disappointed by the OC hire. I’m not excited about the recruits, I’m not on pins and needles wondering what roster changes will happen because of the portal, I don’t feel the need to find out every tidbit I can on future opponents. Many of you don’t agree with the way I fan but I don’t think my passion for the school and/or sport has ever been questioned. And unfortunately, I think my current viewpoint is becoming more prevalent among the fanbase.

The sexy big name hire would likely have been just as risky.

Spread vs Pro set, but still run heavy.
