Large crash in Tour de France due to spectator sign

The peloton was split right after the peak of the Côte de Saint-Rivoal as Tony Martin was impeded by a card board sign.

The peloton was not going very fast, most riders are back on their bikes.

A huge crash at #TDF2021 this morning was caused when a spectator held out a sign and struck a rider.

Crowd control in bike racing – especially the grand tours – is a complete mess and needs a total overhaul. This isn’t the first incident with a fan taking down a rider and it won’t be the last. And not to be overly dramatic, but I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see a terrorist incident at the TdF in the future, like at the Boston Marathon. It would be stupidly easy to pull off.

I don’t know what the solution is, but the status quo is a nightmare.
