Hope he stays far away from the Huntsman.
I’d take their other F that entered the portal if he doesn’t get drafted tho, Gideon George.

Are you sure, considering the current state of this program, that it has the luxury of being choosy?
-
NarfUteParticipant
Yep. Kid effed us during a critical part of the recruiting cycle. He’s a contributor to the dumpster fire we’ve seen the last few years.
-
UteBackerModerator
Meh. He was a dumb kid back then. If he can help us, great. If we can find someone better, then great.
-
chinngiskhaanParticipant
He was 18 and being manipulated by grown men. He offers shooting and rebounding. At the very least he’s a step up from Battin in virtually every way.
-
RickParticipant
Shooting???
-
chinngiskhaanParticipant
Yeah… he’s a decent outside shooter that got the tips, which is likely why he feels a need for a scenery change. Can’t find much on HS stats, but when he was at flower mound he shot 35% from 3. If he can get back to that number he would be our second or third best shooter. He may be broken though
-
RickParticipant
By “outside” I hope you are not referring to 3’s. He shot under 20%. He IS a physical rebounder and post defender but calling him a decent shooter is a bit of a stretch.
-
chinngiskhaanParticipant
Pretty sure I made this clear in my previous post? Did you reply without reading it? Yes, he had a terrible year shooting last year, and was mediocre at best the year before. That being said, at at least some point in high school, based on the statistic that I referred to in my previous post, he was at one point a reliable outside shooter, especially when you consider his stature. IF he were to return to that level of shooting from the outside (meaning 3 pt shooting in case that wasn’t obvious enough already), he would be one of the better outside shooters on the team. Will he ever regain confidence in his shooting? I have no clue… but a change in scenery can sometimes do a lot of good for a guy’s confidence. Like I said in the post of mine that you originally responded to. Even if he doesn’t shoot any better than he did last year at BYU, he’s still better than Riley Battin in just about every conceivable way. He’s stronger, waaaay more athletic, a much more willing, and more skilled defender (that’s not saying much since Battin never did anything on defense other than attempt to take charges), and has the potential to be a much better scorer. Even if he doesn’t fix his shot, he’s still not much worse than Battin from deep.
Is Lohner going to be the second coming of Tom Chambers? No… but he could help the team, and that is what I care about.

I wouldn’t say he effed us…he was under heavy pressure from his parents (related to his dad’s employment).
-
NarfUteParticipant
I get that – but he did the Utes dirty by signing his NLI in the early period and backing out just before the last signing day (meaning Larry wasn’t recruiting for his position during the cycle)
Now, if the kid wants to come here and the coaches think he’ll add value and the locker room is okay with it (not a Dusan situation but a Gach situation) then sure give him a shot at redemption. He can prove me wrong 😏

Not worth passing up potentially useful players out of spite. Ignoring the past, does Lohner make the team better? If yes, then grab him. If no, then don’t. That simple
-
chinngiskhaanParticipant
He could potentially make the team a lot better, a bit better at least
-
-
UtahUtesRockParticipant
Yeah I hope we pass him up out of spite…that seems wise.

chinngiskhaanParticipant
Not sure what nm means… but I’d take Lohner. He offers a lot of what we need
-
chinngiskhaanParticipant
Though he hasn’t played well at TSPP
-
PlainsUteParticipant
FYI, I think OP’s saying he has nothing further to comment beyond the post title (no messsage), the system requires text in mesg.

Interesting. He clearly slipped last year after a promising freshman season with the Cougs, but there is still a ton of potential there. Utes need some depth in the front court, I wouldn’t mind if he ended up with us.

Couldn’t happen to a more stellar bunch of fan bois, then those fans down south.

OnlyuParticipant
He turned into a whipping boy of sorts. Kid plays hard and rebounds. Something that will fit nicely with what Coach Smith is looking for. Portal life is crazy but this brings Colin Chandler back in play post mission I assure you. Caleb is a good kid despite making the choice he made earlier.
Coach Smith doing work to get the program back to respectability quickly and I can’t wait!!

Made a rare trip to Cougarboard curious to see their reaction. Interesting that a few of them feel Lohner is indeed desinted to play for Utah. (Seems doubtful to me)
Lot of the posters are on their pity pot, oblivious that pretty much every program in college hoops is going through constant roster changes in the off-season. Just the way things are now.
-
WhittyParticipant
OnlyU, sounds like it’s all but a done deal he’s headed to Utah? Safe to say?
-
OnlyuParticipant
Heard about 5 days ago there was a good chance he follows Burgess so I’d say it’s 80/20 right now. Would imagine Harlan will have to approve but I think he will. Have also heard there are significant issues with Pope…he’s kind of being exposed right now. Was never in it for the long run down there and this season hurts his plan of jumping to a bigger job. Getting drilled the first 3-4 years (at least) in the Big 12 or whatever it ends up being, isn’t going to get him the job he wants so he needed a good year this year and from what I know he took it out on the boys down there when it fell apart toward the end. Hearing there will be another player hit the portal down there soon as well.

Will we have to find a job for his dad?

Is the other player a third potential transfer, or is it George? tia

I say yessssss!
I Lohner or two would’ve changed the complexion of last year…
Let’s let bygones be bygones! 🙂

I never hated Lohner for his decision and will welcome him to the Utes if he comes here.

If nothing else it’s probably causing a meltdown over on the boogerboard

UteFanaticParticipant
There’s always room for kids that want to play at Utah. I couldn’t care less about what happened with him in the past.

IF we only have two scholarships available, I’d prefer they go to the Davis brothers, assuming they want into our program.
-
OnlyuParticipant
Gach is likely gone so you will have 3 most likely. Wouldn’t blame Lohner if he bounced to Texas…TDS fans have been brutal to him
-
chinngiskhaanParticipant
Gach is leaving again? Hope he can learn to be happy wherever he goes.
-
Ute2Participant
Gone???
ferch!
I’ve been a major Gach honk! Singing his praises all up and down this board!
What gives???

BYU fan saying UCLA and Baylor are the leaders for Lohner. 😂 😂 😂
Both of those schools could get almost any transfer they want. Why would they be interest in Lohner?
-
chinngiskhaanParticipant
Another fan that knows the family now saying there is a 95% chance he goes to Utah.
-
UteBackerModerator
I think that kid needs a fresh start as far away from Utah as he can get.
-
OnlyuParticipant
Hearing about Gach surprised me as well. I’m not sure he has a “free transfer” left but I’m not 100% sure on that. I do question the fit, something’s missing with him and I don’t know where the blame lies. He flashes potential but when I break it down he’s now played for 3 coaches in 3 different systems and inconsistency is his middle name. Have to think it’s the player vs. the system IMO.
-
Ute2Participant
Gonna take awhile to collect all the egg from my face for touting Gach so much on here…
alot of my enthusiasm was predicated on the thought that he would get in the lab with Smith over the offseason and really work to take that next step(ala Sam Merrill).
but that won’t happen if he’s poking around looking for his next stop as I take it he is…
What a bummer.
scrambled eggs anyone?

on another note, hey, isn’t it cool that we’re on her having interesting and exciting conversations about….. basketball?
