I grew up in Utah, have most of my family there… it is interesting seeing the stark contrast there. At Atlanta’s Airport last month the vast majority of people didn’t give a s**t about masks, distancing, etc.
Moving to Hawaii in late June, even an open air farmer’s market i went to everyone was nice and wore masks out of respect for others and family.
I have family in Utah that still think this is a Hoax… How do you convince right wing nuts to protect themselves and the elderly around them? Anyone have similar problems? I don’t want to lose all of my older relatives and the rest of my grandparents.

Central Coast UteParticipant
You can start by asking the left wing nuts here in California to practice what they preach. Or maybe if the right wingers start rioting, the virus won’t spread amongst them because if the left taught us anything, rioters are immune to COVID.

Watch who you’re calling a right wing nut, pal.
-
UtesbyfiveParticipant
I might be sympathetic to you, but as soon as you slandered non mask wearers I lost interest in what you have to say. Keep up the name calling and there will never be any unity.

Central Coast UteParticipant
Exactly. I was with him up until then.

Paraphrasing the wise Winston Wolf (Pulp Fiction), “Pretty please, with sugar on top, wear the f**king mask.” 😉

There’s not going to be any reconciliation while the shaming continues. Swearing at people and mocking people, by others with a differing opinion, is the exact same problem we have with every divisive issue in this country today.
I’m sick of it.
Fauci and the CDC lied to us about the efficacy of masks at the outset of this, then reversed course and said they lied. Do they think that this makes people think they’re trustworthy? Can they see that this might make people not trust them?
Personally, I wear the mask, because I don’t view it as an assault on my constitutional rights, and just an inconvenience, but I can see where people might be pretty f**king p**sed off that the powers that be lie to them, and keep on lying to them.

It was a joke based off a movie quote.
Lighten up Francis.

Sometimes recommendations change as additional data is discovered. That’s not “lying to you”…it’s literally how science works.
We knew very little about this virus when it started, and as more and more studies and details have come out around the efficacy of masks, the guidance has changed.

Not true. Fauci and the CDC knew wearing the mask was helpful, but because of poor planning by this admin. did not have the supply to mask up a nation in March.
If he was truthful, Fauci would have needed to say, maskes are helpful in reducing the spread but please don’t attempt to buy any because everthing we have is needed for the frontline workers. I think you know how Americans would have reacted….f the frontline workers.
It was a tough decesion to make – and anti maskers will use this as their get out of jail card going forward.

Fauci is on record stating that Trump did everything that Fauci recommended. Everything!

Agree with SkinyUte, Sorry you view initial strategic priorities of suggesting providing and preserving PPP to the higher need of medical professionals and first responders earlier in the spring as a “lie”. Then confirming more scientific research and observation of the transmission via airborne transmission more recently was a “lie” too. Jesus, it’s simple and not disjointed to understand.
-
EagleMountainUteParticipant
Except it is full of logical problems and government bloat. Dr Fauci and other Doctors have lied about so many things. The “misunderstanding” or lack of utilizing basic scientific knowledge when it comes to this virus have been so apparent that you can only blame it on a lie(with intent) or absolute incompetence. I don’t believe ignorance was driving many of the very stupid decisions.

I for one can’t wait for Bill Gates vaccine to save us all.
You’re nuts if you think the pharmaceutical companies don’t have everyone’s best interest in mind. My hell, they’re going to provide the vaccines for free to everyone. No one person or company will make a dime off the vaccines.

Right wing nuts it’s okay now. Our orange crime boss and part time president when not golfing is wearing a mask now. You don’t have to die on that hill anymore. Watch Fox News and pick something else to be mad at the libs for. While the rest of world feels sorry for us as our death count soars above 130,000 we still have morons that find it too inconvenient to put a damn mask on.
-

UteThunderParticipant
Personal choice. Personal responsibility. People need to manage their own risk.
If your elderly relatives don’t want to wear a mask, that should be a choice they can make. Likewise, why is it the responsibility of “right wing nuts” to protect your elderly family members? If your family aren’t willing to wear a mask themselves, it seems odd that you would expect other people to wear masks for them.
-
PhiladelphiaUteParticipant
You won’t have to convince them of it. Darwinism will take care of that.
-
DuhwayneParticipant
Unfortunately, the masks aren’t for the wearer, but everyone else. They are way more effective at reducing spread to others than they are at reducing your own exposure. It’s not about muh freedom. It’s about not harming other people. Just wear the damn mask. I’ve been wearing one since March. You can handle it.
If there is still any confusion about the importance of face masks, this graphic should help:

I’m not afraid of getting the virus, I just wear the mask because it makes other people feel better and it doesn’t hurt me to wear it at all.

gUrthBrooksParticipant
Ever tried nicely inviting them or do you go straight to the insults calling them nuts?
-

So you don’t wear a mask cause your feelings got hurt? Are you a 6 year old child?
-
gUrthBrooksParticipant
I wear a mask in public. But I’m also a participant on social media and I see these constant passive aggressive or backhanded comments for people to wears masks and rarely hear a polite open invitation. It’s kind of toxic, YOU know.

Are the governors of Michigan and New York right wing nuts? They actually put people with Corona in Nursing Homes. Killing elderly people despite us knowing one thing about the virus. Don’t be around elderly people.
I also don’t believe it is the governments job to mandate these things outside of their own interests.
Flu and virus are going to happen. Death is going to happen. Pneumonia and Flu related deaths never decreased during the quarantine of the healthy.
Do I wear a mask? Yes and I generally avoid going to public places mainly because it suits me and I don’t like public things.
It isn’t nutty to have doubt and disbelief in a medical system that kills thousands a year because of medical mistakes. It isn’t a mistake to do as you please.
“I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery.”
-
NavyUteParticipant
By right wing nut, I meant after discussing this pandemic with my 62 year old family member… she thinks this is a hoax, encourages 70 year old Vietnam vet on dialysis and has diabetes to go to national gatherings.
-
UtesbyfiveParticipant
Even better, you like to call your relatives names.
-
Hellhound152Participant
Doesn’t everyone like to call relatives names? That is what gets me through the holidays.
