In May of 2019, the University of St. Thomas, a D-III program, was involuntarily removed from membership in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The MIAC Presidents’ Council cited athletic competitive parity in the conference as a primary concern for removing a founding member, i.e., they win too much.

The NCAA has allowed the athletics program to transition directly to D-I. In October, the Summit League, a non-football conference, offered membership for most sports. Yesterday, the Pioneer Football League provided the university with a football conference.

      Welcome to D-I, Tommies.

      College football is life.

Pioneer League conference and BYU sound like a perfect match.

My daughter played volleyball for St. Olaf College which was in the same D-III conference as St. Thomas.  In most sports St. Thomas basically dominated the schools in that conference.  It was kind of like that Seinfeld episode where Kramer was “dominating the dojo” and it was getting ridiculous both for the other schools in the conference but also for the athletes at St. Thomas.  Moving up will be a huge shock for them, especially in football, but it was well needed.

I agree, but the PFL, a non-scholy league, should be a softer landing than some. I’d think they compete right away in football.

In football yes.  Hockey probably but not women’s volleyball any time soon!  They do have the advantage over most schools in that they are in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metroplex and a solid secondary alternative for kids not good enough for the Gophers or the Big Ten.
