So ESPN has us picked to either play West Virginia in Valero Alamo Bowl or against Michigan in the Rose Bowl?
Which would you prefer?
Opponent, I’ll take West Virginia. Why you ask? Cause Michigan would destroy us this year.
Bowl, um, yeah, this is a case of it is better to have gone to the Rose Bowl and lost than to have never gone at all.
I’ll give the edge to the Rose Bowl. Even a loss in the Rose bowl trumps never having been. I would just hope it is respectable.

Rose Bowl and Kyle every time. I’m not so sure Michigan would beat us. Especially if we were healthy.

Utah would still be down Lutui, Shyne, Fakailoatonga, Dielman, and Fitts. Not sure IF healthy would help. I think it would be a slugfest though and entertaining. Michigan is going to the CFP I believe. I want Whitt vs Urban. That Ohio St Dline is scary good though.

Alamo Bowl for purely selfish reasons….. could go to the bowl game.
Ultimately the best case scenario is the Rose Bowl….

I’m with Texas, Alamo for selfish reason. I will have a trip planned for January 1 and couldn’t go to the Rose bowl, which would kill me. I’ve made both the Fiesta and Sugar and Utah getting in the Rose would lead to no amount of frustration that this would be the year they get in that one.

Rose for me.

I think OSU and Michigan both make the playoff so a Rose Bowl berth would be met with Wisconsin which imo would be perfect for us. I do not want to play Michigan. Not this year..

UTE98Participant
The problem with Michigan and OSU making the playoff is that the Pac12 likely gets left out of the CFP. I cannot see a year where two of the P5 conferences do not get a team in the Playoff.
If the BigXII and Pac12 are left out, I see the CFP folding pretty quickly, especially since both have been left out once. If both are left out this year I don’t see it sticking around more than another year or two.
So for us to make the Rose Bowl with OSU and Michigan making the playoff, we’d have to beat Washington in the Pac12 Championship and be left out of the playoff.
I think the SEC, ACC, Pac12, and BigXII would all be less than happy with two Big10 teams in the playoff. Sadly it is still political, and to be an ongoing concern you need all five P5 conferences to feel they are being treated fairly/equal.

It’s an easy call. You take the Rose every time — even if it’s a certain death march. (Which it’s too soon to call anyway). Even a Rose loss (or, better put, a “Rose Bowl appearance”) is a HUGE feather in the cap of our program. HUUUGE!
The Alamo Bowl is such a strange bowl for us. I’m glad it’s in our fold, but it seems kinda sorry that it’s our second highest bowl affiliation. Seems like it should be our 3rd or 4th.
Hopefully the recent goings on in Las Vegas will elevate the Vegas Bowl. Honestly, a Vegas Bowl should be our 2nd or third biggest bowl behind the Rose and MAYBE the Holiday. Obviously The Veg has a lot of work to do (get into an NFL venue, up the payout, and get the game closer to NYD). But that’s such a great/easy/cheap destination that it would seem to be no problem to get another P5 conference to sign on with it.
In fact, I could easily see Vegas hosting two bowls the way San Diego does with Poinsettia/Holiday. Vegas could have an “A” (post Christmas) and “B” (pre Christmas) bowl, no problem.

The problem with the Vegas Bowl is that they are locked into that pre-christmas scenario, unless they could move to after new year’s because the week between Christmas and New Year’s is already one of their busiest.

Rose bowl. Michigan has winning records against the vast majority of P5s. An anomaly would be Utah. If we lose, we would still have a winning record against them. Would we win? I don’t know but that would be a really big game. And I can’t trade the Rose bowl to Alamo over fear of losing. Win or lose it would help recruiting.

Still 5 games to go and a helluva challenge ahead of us. We’ll be lucky to win 3 of those. Take them one at a time.
