I’m sure you probably saw this, but this made me a huge Morgan Scalley fan. Reminded me of Weddle after the 2006 heartbreaker for the Utes, going up to John Beck to congratulate him on a good game. Weddle is my all-time favorite Ute (except for my brother-in-law;)
But for Scalley to take a minute and congratulate Retzlaff after this excruciating loss is incredible and speaks to his character.
I know Scalley has come under some fire in the past about his text message, but he seems like a genuinely good dude who made a mistake. I would be thrilled to have him as my head coach in waiting.
There is also a video of Kalani talking about how he loves Utah and that without Utah, we don’t have half our coaching staff. He talked about loving and respecting your rival. Good stuff. Easier to do when you win, really hard to do when you lose, and Scalley did it. He’s a stud.

I read his lips:
Hey, great game. Guts. Way to stay in there. We are down to some short 5th stringer and a freshman playing like he’s on the JETS. Want to come play and have a great defense behind you? Think about it.
kidding. flame away.

I’m not sure Retzlaff would do any better than guys like Rose or Isaac in this offense. Rose, for example has a better arm and wheels than Retzlaff. Remember that Utah under Whitt is where QBs go to die…

I know. Agree. But with Scalley at the top … 😉

Too bad this game had such a bitter ending. If on 4th and 10, Retzlaff had hit a receiver for a first down with no controversy and BYU completes a drive for the winning FG, Utah fans are disappointed but proud for a team with a short-manned offense giving it a good try. And none of the angry words from our AD and frustrated fans throwing debris on the field.
Hopefully Kalani and Morgan will have some exciting games with little controversy against each other in the coming years. Two of the good ones.

I saw that live and was proud of him. On the other hand I get Kyle’s rath and passion towards those refs. What he’s feeling after all these losses came out on that ref. You could see Kalani recognize that too and I’m glad he didn’t feel slighted by Kyle’s lack of a longer congrats handshake/hug.
I like teaching moments like these to teach my kids the ups and downs of playing the game. When you win, celebrate for a bit but go and shake hands, pick someone up and show class and act like you’ve been there before. When you lose, go and shake hands, congratulate and use that feeling of losing to fuel you going forward. Sucks to lose, show some empathy and respect for the losers out there! -

I heard this story second hand, so take it for what it’s worth.
The Rose Bowl year we played Ohio St, when the Utes were at Disneyland Scalley saw a kid wearing a BYU sweatshirt. He razzed the kid for a minute then talked about BYU’s football program. The kid said he loved Kalani, and Scalley said, something along the lines of really? Then Scalley proceeds to call Kalani on a video chat and basically says, “Kalani I’ve got someone who wants to talk to you.” Then Scalley hands his phone to the kid who talks to Kalani for a bit.
I seem to remember I heard the story from my zoobie in-laws, so it wasn’t some Utah fan trying to puff up Scalley.
Scalley is a good dude, and I’ll always love his comments on the Rivalry game his Sr. year. I hate those pussies (cats). still brings a smile to my face.
