Which Utes that are currently in the portal do you think are most likely to remove their name from the portal and come back to Utah?
In 2023 we had Micah Bernard do that, which turned out well. There’s a few guys I would like to see come back!

Boumeister and Calhoun.🤞

Boumeister got too tired. He had to punt way too much and this was too hard on him. 🙂

Rose. I read that there are over 100 QBs in the portal. He hasn’t done enough to get a great NIL deal or trade up. He’d likely only have lesser options.
The bigger question is whether Whitt/team will be willing to take them back! The players are already in the driver’s seat, I’m not sure I’d be very forgiving or willing to move from shotgun to the back seat…

WasatchRangerParticipant
Rose was my initial thought. I don’t think Rose has enough game tape to get a big check or a starting spot from a P4 school. Battling with Dampier and (insert other Transfer QB) might be one of his best options. I guess time will tell!

The problem with Rose is that, I’m assuming, he will most likely not be wanted back by Beck. He’s not a dual threat QB. Yes, he can occasionally run when needed, but he’s not a running threat like Dampier or 2021-2022 Rising. Wilson is probably the only QB Beck would welcome back, but I doubt the team wants him back.

Maybe my memory of former Cam is tainted by recent Cam, but Rose looked just as good or better running than Cam ever did. At least, from an athletic perspective. Maybe not on the option reads.

Ever wonder if you’re crazy? I did when I read about those wanting Wilson back and how he’d fit in Beck’s offense. Rose is a much bigger running threat than Wilson, I’d take Bottari running over Wilson. At this point I almost would take Cam over Wilson, and the door is slammed shut with Cam for me.
Cautiously optimistic Whitt will be more open to increased offense. Risk equals bigger upside reward. No risk keeps the other team in the game way too long.
Whitt’s past allowed offenses might result in three things, two of them not ideal.
1. The offense can’t score enough points, nor sustain drives long enough to give the defense rest. (2024)
2. The offense scores just enough to be in a position to win, however allows other teams to stay in the game. (2023)
3. The offense scores just enough and the defense steps up and covers the deficit. (UCF)

once you make your intentions to leave the door should close and not open back up! this might stop some of the nonsense. also if you state that you are going to tspp slam the door shut and deadbolt it.
-
DataUteParticipant
Agree on tspp. I think it’s ok to explore a little, kind of feel out if there are better situations/offers after an emotionally charged season. I don’t love it and it does speak to some loyalty, but the team changes so much they might just want to feel heard and get their name out there because they might have a job opportunity too good to pass up before deciding things were all right where they were.
-
WasatchRangerParticipant
Not sure if I agree. Having Micah Bernard come back was really nice, this season would have been even more disappointing without him.
Most of these guys are 18-22. They’re young and figuring things out. If they get out into the Portal and realize the grass isn’t always greener, I think letting them come back is fine.

Please come back: Calhoun, Boumeister, and Rose
Sure: Randle, Pepa, Stanley,
No thank you: Wilson (if the drama rumors are true)-

I saw that Boumeister is taking a visit to Texas. Not sure if they have offered him yet but would assume he is not coming back.

Pepa and Rose. The rest are just not worth the time honestly.
I think Wilson could be good if he sat a year and ran the scout team.

i will pass on Calhoun blew against the zoobies they can have him.

Pepa: definitely yes.
Rose, maybe if unable to find at least one or two serviceable backups fit for Becks offense. Still a risk coming off surgery. I doubt Rose gets picked up. Maybe he just wants new scenery. Can’t blame him.
Calhoun: no thanks. Utes easily find a better replacement.
Wilson not wired for Becks QB run game. Needs a fresh start in a pro-style offense

Too me who is want is Calhoun, he is by far the best and most talented player currently in the portal for the Utes.
With the coaching changes, I do wonder if maybe 1 of the RBs will come back, maybe.
Whitt changed his stance on players entering the portal when the rules changed, I believe he still meets with them if they want to come back to get a feel of the player.
-
Jim VanderhoofParticipant
It’s a hard line to cross. On one hand you are trying to help the players become successful and prepare them for life after football. Making big NIL money can be life changing for the future. On the other hand you want them to be loyal to the program and ask them to take less money because you can’t match other offers.
It puts both coaches and players in a bad situation. A player that’s a good player, teammate and someone you want to stay leave the door open. If it’s a marginal player if they leave the door is closed. It has to go both ways. The system is at fault not the coaches and players.

Hard pass on Calhoun.
Dude quits. F him.
-
DataUteParticipant
He got offered twice what Utah did. Didn’t quit. Actually, he will come back if the collective matches. They got the NIL offer (sounds like tampering to me), he went back to Utah to show his ‘market’ value and they balked. Maybe it is high or above our valuation or there is trepidation based on this year and some being overpaid, underdelivered, but it is what it is in this stupid era/environment
-
Holladay UteParticipant
Agree w/ this. Utah has limited resources and we just have to trust that the program allocates them in the best way possible for the team. Would love to have Calhoun back if it works out.
Hopefully, the coaches are smarter in how they allocate NIL going forward. I still don’t fault them for bringing Cam back b/c we’d be in the playoff if he hadn’t gotten injured (I would’ve done the same thing). In hindsight though, I wish we wouldn’t have paid Cam who’s just proven to be too injury prone and kept JJ instead.
-
jshame17Participant
Someone please help me with all these NIL excuses…
The team does not and cannot negotiate these agreements, right? What money do they have to allocate if this is true?
It is all handled by outside collectives and agents now apparently. Or does Whitt have a line item
He is now managing and allocating per player? I know he can say who he wants or is willing to let go, but this is such a damn mess..Did Whitt and Co. balk at the counter offer for Calhoun? The collective?
Who the hell is actually calling the shots on these decisions?

Jack Bouwmeester just committed to Texas today.

Texas has a massive NIL. I’m guessing they can easily afford to pay a punter. Schools like us must be more conservative with monies.
