WIth the news of Dr. Hill’s retirement today I thought I would share an experience I had with Chris a few years back:
When the University announced it was taking a two year football hiatus with BYPOO I was actually quite upset. I was a 22 year old undergrad student at the U and I LOVED the rivalry (still do, to be honest). So, I wrote Dr. Hill a lengthy email about the importance of rivalries to students, fans, boosters, etc. I’ll be frank, it wasn’t a very nice email haha.
To Dr. Hill’s credit, he responded, gave me his phone number, and invited me to give him a call to discuss it further. So I did and we had a very nice conversation where he explained why he decided to put the rivalry game on hold and thanked me for giving him my input.
After that experience he had my support 100%. Always a stand up guy who did amazing things for our University.
Oh and also, you’ll notice after the two year hiatus we’ve played the Turds-Down-South year in, year out. I think you can thank me for that 🙂

So it was YOU! [Explicit] bag! Hilarious.

Thanks, I never wrote to him, but when I get a chance I will do so to thank him for all he has done for the U. I hope others will also.

Big mistake. Utah needs to drop BYU once and for all. There is absolutely nothing to be gained by playing them. They are a waste of time.
I’ll let you in on a little secret: The rivalry is over, Utah won.

Can I get an AMEN!!

Playing them 3-5 times per decade, while playing Utah State 3-5 times per decade (and not in the same year) would be a good adjustment.
Hopefully the new AD won’t simply reschedule them every year through 2035 as his first action.

Except….college rivalries are what makes college sports so much fun. Look, I get that the rivalry game today is a bit of a trap game right now. But, it’s what makes college ball so unique, captivating, and exciting.
I fear we as fans are too quick to become like Icarus. Our dominance over BYU the last decade or so have given us an over-inflated view of ourselves. At the end of the day we are a mid-level P-5 team in a mid-level P-5 conference. The BYU/Utah rivalry is one of the greatest college rivalries. It truly would be a shame to see that go away.
I could get on board with an every-other-year type of schedule with BYU, but I wouldn’t want to go any further than that.
Bring on the hate.

Let me be one fan at least that agrees with you. I still like the game itself, it’s everything that surrounds the game that has become unbearable at times. It still annoys me that we don’t play Utah State and Weber State every year in basketball, home and home. And in my (and I stress my) perfect world, we would play Utah State more regularly in football as well, BYU every year, and then a P5 opponent. Does it make sense from a recruiting/scheduling standpoint? Heck no! But I always liked the roadie up to Logan, and doesn’t hurt that there are quite a few Aggies in the family.

EagleMountainUteParticipant
Ok I can maybe understand Logan. But Provo? No reason at all to go there.
