My thoughts…

What a season. F**k this offense. Now that that is out of the way, my thoughts:

We will get destroyed this weekend. BYU was our last stand and Whitt let the team down. And we probably get beat against UCF and Iowa St, although Iowa St is another team dumb enough to try to win games this way, so maybe we win that game. 4-8 baby.

As for BYU. I really don’t care.

As for Whitt…I hope he retires. I don’t know if he will. A few weeks ago I was 100% sure he had the fire back and was going to go into the bye week and come out and destroy BYU and he did what Whitt does…

As for Scalley. My biggest concern. For 20+ years we’ve run Whitt’s man defense, blitz defense and it has been wildly successful. This year…this year we have changed the defense a TON. We gone from a man heavy/blitz defense to a bend-don’t-break and it hasn’t been unsuccessful…but it is reason #2 we’ve lost multiple games this year.

What worries me about this, is this is Vic Fangio’s defense. He started it and everyone has copied it and we are copying it as well. Hell, Sitake ran it for years. Well, BYU is running Whitt/Hill’s man/blitz defense now and guess who else is?

Vic Fangio. The Eagles run some of the most man concepts and blitz some of the most in the NFL this year.

Why is Scalley moving towards a defense everyone has figured out and the minds behind that zone defense is moving away from it? That is a huge red flag. Our next HC has never been a HC and wants to make sweeping changes to the offense and defense. Color me nervous. We might be in for a rough 2-3 years if this doesn’t work out.

This offseason is going to be wild.

Finally, onto Harlan’s outburst…I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. I don’t think there is anyone associated with the University of Utah who has any pull/say in real decisions that likes the Big 12. Utah doesn’t want to be in the Big 12.

Harlan was doing nothing more than laying the groundwork for Utah to leave. When Utah jumps to the ACC or forms a new conference with Stanford and Cal, we will all say, “we should have seen this coming after the BYU game…”

It’s not a big deal and it was done to give Utah an exit strategy. Sure, BYU fans will scream about it but guess what? They are idiots. The people with real money at Utah are happy with Harlan’s reaction and if we aren’t in the Big 12 in 2025, it wouldn’t shock me. We probably will be, but if the ACC would take us, we’d be gone in a hearbeat.

Anyways, this season sucks, f**k you guys and I’ll see you tomorrow.

I’m interested to hear more of your thoughts on the conferences.
Would being in the ACC bring in lower revenue than what we currently get from the Big 12? I remember seeing SMU taking a massive cut to joint.
Also, with the ACC being further dispersed than the big 12, would that affect recruiting, especially compared to BYU, who could make a case that their conference is still somewhat regional?

Cal & Stanford took massive pay cuts. SMU agreed to ZERO tv revenue for 9 years to get to move up. Private schools like Stanford & SMU can afford to do those kinds of things. Cal could only afford to because UCLA is giving them half of their B1G money as a condition of being allowed to leave Cal behind.

edit: should have read the whole thread first. @TheMiamiUte said the same thing better

Utah going to the ACC is a complete nonstarter, unless the university is willing to play for free. Check the below out and tell me if you’d sign up for that deal:

      SMU
SMU will not receive any TV money for the first nine years in the ACC. The school’s boosters are expected to cover the shortfall. SMU raised $100 million from its First Week Society and $25 million from fans to provide about $25 million to the athletics budget annually for five years.

      Cal
Cal will receive a reduced television-revenue share for the first nine years in the ACC. Cal’s current contract is set to make just $11 million per year for the first seven years.

      Stanford
Stanford will receive a reduced television-revenue share for the first nine years in the ACC. Stanford’s revenue share will start at 30 percent for the first seven years, then go to 70 percent in Year 8, 75 percent in Year 9, and 100 percent in Year 10.

Compare those numbers with Utah expected to receive close to $50 million per year from the Big 12 conference, with approximately $32 million coming from the conference’s media deal.

I’m all for taking a pay cut. Make some phone calls to the Pacific Northwest, turn around and give notice to the B1g 12, wait it out in the new PAC or just go full bore into the deal. I don’t care if it will be temporary or full time. Happiness over money. Life is to short to let yourself live in misery. There are rewards other than the cash flow.

Yeah they can always make up the shortfall by increasing season ticket and crimson club donation prices.

Oh, if you’ve been reading my posts you’ll know that I’m all for leaving the Big 12 and joining a reconstructed PAC. However, I’m pretty certain that the university’s administration and the athletic staff don’t feel the same way. So, no matter how we feel about the situation, it looks to me like we’ll be in the Big 12 until the next big round of college football movement.

Tony loves ticket price increases like a fat kid loves celery. That’s one of his favourite tropes

Seems like the most success the D had in the zoo game was when we went back to the old defensive style blitzing.

“The people with real money at Utah are happy with Harlan’s reaction”

Are you connected with these people or do you have sources on this? But if you have sources can you let us know? Don’t need to name names or titles, but I’m just curious if this really is true or is just speculation.

If speculation, that’s fine. I’m just curious.

“wants to make sweeping changes to the offense”
Total offense is 93 out of 133
Scoring offense is 105 out of 133
Passing offense is 80 out of 133
Red zone offense is 86 out of 133
Color me ECSTATIC Morgan wants sweeping changes to the offense!

Those are pretty close to the 2023 numbers. Since it’s not being used to light the U after football games anymore, someone needs to wire that detonator device to the offensive coaches offices and take them to rubble. Anything short of a complete rebuild at this point is a waste of effort and resources.

CFB is driven by money. If Utah makes the most money in the Big XII we all need to get used to Big XII teams. I do see them leaving unless there is another major shakeup.

Bloom where you are planted and let Utah surprise everyone next year when they don’t have a target on their back.
