I think Troy starts the season, but Bateman wins out the job and keeps it to the end of the season.

I think it’s Troy’s year to make an impact.

I think it’s Troy the whole season. Ha, no I don’t. Not with that inexperienced line, Troy gets hurt and Cooper gets the finish, starting the last 5 games.

I would challenge you to watch the E. Wash vs. Wash St. game on Daily Motion. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4uof2f_2016-09-03-eastern-washington-eagles-vs-washington-state-cougars-1st-quarter_sport

Troy Taylor’s offense does not require th O-line to hold blocks for very long. Screen plays don’t require the line to block at the line of scrimmage, but rather downfield against smaller defenders. Additionally, Troy Taylor’s offense doesn’t require the line to hold blocks very long in drop back sets, and the defense has to respect so many screen plays that it’s tough to pin the ears back as well. That’s why when Troy Taylor says the line will be the strength of the offense, it is because they will be blocking downfield against DB’s and LB’s like in the E.W. Vs. Wash. ST. game.

With how much Taylor has GUSHED about Bateman, I think Bateman will get the chance to compete and win the job somewhere along the line. I think you can trust Taylor as a QB guru that the best guy will win the job and play.

This is a hard question, because we have yet to see how he performs in the new offense we have. So I can’t for a fact say Troy will end the season as our starter.

Starting Bateman would set the program back.  New QB with a one and done?! We are much better off taking advantage of an experienced PAC 12 QB (Troy) or grooming Tyler for the future.  IMO Bateman should be 3rd string.

Meh. Again, watch the E.W. vs Wash St. game last year. E.W. QB plays in his first game and throws his way to 45 points and the win. In this scenario I think you have to put your trust in the QB GURU and trust that he will get the best guy the reps and put him in a spot to win games. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4uof2f_2016-09-03-eastern-washington-eagles-vs-washington-state-cougars-1st-quarter_sport

Agreed. We need to win games. Whoever starts this fall will have little to no bearing on next year or the future QB’s (I take that back, if Huntley starts it “may” affect Shelley).

Taylor is going to start the best QB that is available and that will be Bateman by the time the season begins.  He is the best passer on the team and is an adequate runner.  He is also extremely smart and will pick up Taylor’s offense very quickly.

Exactly. I think Taylor knows this but he could never say it, for fear of losing a player before fall starts.

Why couldn’t he make it at Bama?

My thoughts exactly. He couldn’t even beat out Jalen Hurts, and Jalen wasn’t amazing either. I’m skeptical.

When he got to Alabama he had an NFL QB in front of him and several other elite 11 QBs to contend with.  Not sure how you can say Jaylen Hurts was a bad QB when he started as a true freshman for THE elite football program in the country.  There isn’t QB on the Utes roster that could even carry Hurts’ jock strap.

I didn’t say Hurts is a bad QB, just that he is not special/amazing. I don’t think you’d have a hard time finding Alabama fans that agree with me. Maybe he will improve with time. And that he is better than any QB’s on Utah’s roster is not surprising, but there are certainly lesser programs than Alabama that have better QB’s.

Wasn’t Bateman yanked from starting after losing to Mississippi in 2015?

Agreed. It’s either Troy or Tyler. Bateman is likely the 3rd string QB.

Whoever plays QB, I feel better than I ever have that there are no unreplaceable QBs in our system.  I think Taylor will have enough control to use whoever he feels is best.  I haven’t had that level of QB optomism since BJ was playing.

I heard in Spring practice Bateman looked the best on short passes.

Not a fan of platooning at QB, but if the Utes had a red zone specialist, that might work.

I think what’s being overlooked is that Troy was not healthy for the majority of last season. If he stays healthy, I feel like he’s going to be our guy. He’s a senior QB who has the respect of the rest of the offense, and when he’s good, he’s good.

Bateman is hard to really get a grip on because we’ve seen so little of him. If he’s really blowing coaches away in practice, as some here claim he is, then I agree that he should get a shot. But it’s hard to get a good read on him when he’s taking so few reps with the 1s.

Huntley is a gunslinger and is inexperienced. I’m also not sure if he’s put on much weight yet, but last year he was only like 190 pounds. He could collapse if you breathed on him wrong. I think it might not be the worst decision for him to redshirt this year and let Troy/Bateman battle it out.

As for my answer: I think Troy is the guy from start to finish, we win 8-9 games and come in second in the South behind U$C.

Keep in mind that last year only 20% of quarterbacks in college football who started their teams’ first game also started their final game. So if you think Troy is the starter at the beginning of the year, then there’s an 80% chance he’s not the starter at the end of the year.

Right and that’s the question, who will be QB at the END of the season. Last season was the first one I can remember in a long time where our starter at QB played the whole season.

I’m good with whoever wins, but they sure as heck better not keep going through the same problems we have had with our quarterbacks for the past 8 or 9 years. I trust that Troy will make the right decision to help us win games, but we have to improve at quarterback, I don’t know how many more seasons we can afford to watch them struggle. We’re only 1 solid quarterback away from a PAC 12 championship, so whoever it is, has to be better then what we have had in recent years!
