I wish there was some public metric or transparency surrounding NIL with football compared to basketball. I’m not suggesting equality, I just think it would be fantastic to know what Smith is doing with his men’s basketball (NIL) budget compared to what Whittingham is doing with his. I would almost guarantee the NIL budget for football is MUCH larger in comparison – yet Whittingham can’t seem to find a backup quarterback to save his life, TWO YEARS IN A ROW!!
Yet here is Craig Smith coaching at the Hunty, with Kem Gardner sitting on the front row at games rolling quarters across the court for his NIL donation. I firmly believe Craig is a good, possibly great coach overachieving with (with all due respect) a pretty bad roster. Good for him. Craig deserves a TON of respect for what he’s accomplishing. For goodness sake can we have a year or two of solid NIL to see what Craig can do with it? Imagine what the Runnin Utes are doing this year had someone been willing to pay Deivon Smith!! Rant over.

Calling Craig Smith a good, possibly great coach is the funniest thing I have heard in months. Yes, we just won two games in a row. One against possibly the worst Kansas team we have seen in a decade and the other over a mediocre KSU squad. Prior to that we lost three road games in a row against two mediocre teams and one crappy team. Smith’s teams have consistently shot poorly from the free throw line pretty much since he has been here. His rotations and substitutions are garbage. We have several games because we are not great on the defensive glass quite often (see the Cincy game last week as a glaring example). He has proven to be a poor recruiter and that is an undisputable fact.

I do think his teams give effort despite their glaring weaknesses and he seems to be a decent guy. I don’t dislike him in any way but he is neither good and nowhere near great.

Well, I think Smith is a good coach on the court, but he’s still responsible for putting the team together. The talent we have or don’t have is on him.
