It is exciting because it is Football talk. I listened to Kall 700 for like two segments. OC had a good point that generally you get like 20-30% from the class that actually produces. He brought up 2012 which had 28 signees and only 12 really produced was his arguement. I tend to agree with that you may see results from some of these players in a few years. Obviously Johnson is going to be the impact player immediately and Blair. Potentially a wideout has a chance to step it up and I think Green may get buried unless we have a flurry of injuries at RB again.
I like what Whitt said when asked the question about the quality of the class. Basically in the MWC Utah didn’t have a chance to get any of these guys maybe 10% or as high as 25%. I didn’t quite understand what Whitt meant by the in state thing. He seemed to be backpedaling or arguing that a lot of guys are returning from missions or something? Seemed like he was covering for the Tufele to USC thing, I am more disapointed over losing Ellis personally.
They also talked about Penisini on the radio and he is going to be playing soon. As long as he stayed in shape.
The huge get of the day was probably Larry K stealing a little thunder from Football. I am really excited about Basketball in 2017.

The in state thing was simple:
1 – The in state was very top heavy and most of those kids left the state. UW got one, USC got two, Stanford took two, BYU took two. I think the last couple of years have turned Utah coaches off the instate kids. They demand the red carpet then leave anyways. I think you will see Utah change the way we recruit in state kids. Utah will probably make them jump through more hoops before they seriously recruit them because they are tired of the last minute switching the kids do. Also, the early signing day might help.
2 – After the the four star kids, the in state kids weren’t that great. They aren’t bad, but they are very easily replaceable for Utah, not replaceable for BYU. So, BYU needs those kids a lot more because they can’t find other kids that are just as good.
3 – We had a small class this year. We had a lot of push forwards that count towards this class. For example, Shyne, Blackmon, Nacua and a bunch of other count towards this class. If we had a full 25 scholarships, BYU loses out on 3-4 of their class of in state kids.
As far as Ellis goes, I think he still ends up at Utah…after his JC period.

Yes I enjoyed his statement about letting these five star in state kids have less access. It is alarming what Tufele potentially left with to USC.

Yes I heard Whitt’s comment too about the 10%. I think we all knew that, but he was so matter-of-fact about it, it made it hit me. Welcome to the big league.

Damn near everyone I knew in a Utah high school with a drive to succeed also wanted to do it out of state. Many of them did it. These kids have the perfect opportunity to do it, at zero expense to their parents, and a chance to do it with a big school. Who can blame ’em?
Nevermind that they might be taught better and given more starting opportunities in Utah. They’re kids. They don’t know.

It is what it is in a small town, life is always better in the big city, state.
Hopefully, if Utah can continue to be good, that will change. It took BYU 30 years to get the type of loyalty they have now with some in state kids. Utah has been good for 10 years. If they can keep it up for 10 more years, then maybe a Tufele stays home.
