I have seen quite a few people hoping to land Dampier – I don’t share the same dream.
His film and stats are not all that compelling.
What makes people think he could transition to the B12 and be an above average qb?

New Mexico played lower level teams. Dampier nor Beck are going to make the Utah O any better. pathetic choice

For me it is just about getting another QB option in the QB room without really having to do anything and not having to worry about whether or not he can learn the playbook. At the very least, you bring him in and he could be a very serviceable backup.

Dampier screams Dequan Finn (Baylor). G5 QB who got by on athleticism stepping up a level. Baylor went on their winning streak once they went back to Sawyer Robertson because to win consistently at the P5 level, you have to be able to throw the ball.

This is the most accurate perspective.
He ran for over 1000 yards and somehow stayed healthy. That is a miracle from an Utah fan perspective.

Dampier looks great, especially for his first year as a starter. The question isn’t whether we would want him or not, but whether we can get him above other teams. The “lower level teams” argument isn’t as strong when you consider what Diego Pavia has been able to do at Vandy coming from NM State.
If Whittingham can turn over the reigns to Beck and beck can also bring Dampier, I think that’s a slam dunk. Two big ‘ifs.’

I’m hoping if Utah lands him, his trajectory will be similar to that of Huntley. I mean he’s pretty explosive on the ground and just seems to make plays through the air. Yah he throws picks but he can flat out score points. Also he looked really good vs P4 comp.
-
jshame17Participant
Huntley was a fantastic passer coming out of high school that just needed polishing and time, and was the Florida player of the year.
He threw for 3,636 yards 42 tds and 10 ints his senior year.Dampier threw for 2,400 and rushed for 1,300 to be Arizona player of the year. 23 tds and 5 ints.
He’s not Huntley.

That’s why I said “I’m hoping.” Huntley improved every year while he was here. I’m hoping if Utah picks Dampier up, he’ll improve as a passer each year.

We’ll never know how good Huntley could have been for Utah and how quickly since all 3 of his seasons as a starter were derailed to some extent by injury

I’m pretty sure they just said on the radio that he’s Singer’s half brother.

Dampier is an INT machine. So I’m not sold on him either.
I’ll take that RB though!

I would be excited if we got this guy. I’m not even sure we could get him if we tried hard? Somebody that passed for 2,700 yards, ran for 1,000, and accumulated 31 total TDs w/ 12 INTs seems like a hot commodity. I’m ignorant to our other options. What other good QBs are in the portal (or might be in the portal soon) that we could realistically go after?
If we had this guy last year, how many more games would we have won? Probably quite a few more than we did. We had a couple of common opponents and New Mexico produced way more offensively than we did. Scored 39 against Arizona and scored 50 against Utah State. He didn’t play very well on the road against Auburn (but still managed to throw for nearly 300 yards). He did have a very good game against Washington State (not good passing, but incredible running).
I would hope he becomes a better passer after one year under his belt as a starting QB.
I do get the criticisms about the level of competition and whether his athleticism will translate to tougher competition. At the end of the day, I’m just not sure we can hope for a similar-caliber player to Tyler Huntley or Cam Rising (healthy) at this point. It’s hard to know how transfer QBs will pan out. I was way disappointed in both Jake Bentley and Charlie Brewer. Maybe we’d have more insights into how this guy would pan out given he’d be following his OC (it seems like that would increase the odds that he can produce something consistent w/ the kind of player he was last year).
