It seems like all of the rumored OC candidates are outside of Whittingham’s circle or people he has worked with. If true, that is exciting to see that the new OC is could be coming in with a different philosophy and Whitt is open to that. This will only truly show on the field next season but it is encouraging to see the rumors pointing to something different than what Utah has done in the past.

If Whitt is the HC, it doesn’t matter. In the circle, out of the circle, the offense will be the same. Troy Taylor was as far out of the circle as it comes. He was supposed to spread the ball around. Look at our offense:
Year 1 of Troy Taylor:
The first 8 games, we threw the ball 36 times per game. We were 4-4 with a 4 game losing streak. After that game, we went 3-2 and threw the ball 24 times per game.
Year 2 of Troy Taylor:
Until Huntley got hurt, we threw the ball around 25 times per game. About 15 passes less than Taylor wanted from his offense.
There is a reason why he quietly left after that season. The offense he wanted to run and the offense Whitt wanted to run were very different and the second Whitt had any bumps in the road, he shut down and went back to protecting his offense.
Whitt won’t change. It doesn’t matter who our OC is if Whitt is here.
We will huddle up.
We will bleed the clock.
We will not throw to WR’s.
We will use TE’s and RB’s and make safe, short throws and hope they can break tackles and turn it into big plays.
We will PA off the run game.
If we can’t run, then nothing else will work.-

I find it funny that the offense you describe as Whit’s is pretty much the offense of most of the top NFL teams and most successful college teams.

No one is saying Kyle is dumb. He’s had success because his method (and his defense) is tried and true. But the thing is, it only works until it doesn’t. And when it doesn’t…

Not really. Whitt completely ignores the outside receiver. He takes 2 positions on offense and turns them into blockers.
The Eagles run a run heavy offense. And they feed the ball to AJ Brown.
The 49ers run a very similar offense. And they feed the ball to Deebo and other WR’s.
The Lions are a run heavy team who also features the WR’s.I get what you are saying, but Whitt isn’t doing what these successful guys are doing. If you can’t or won’t throw the ball to the outside or more than 10 yards down the field…you become so easy to defend.
If Whitt doesn’t create turnovers he doesn’t score a lot. So many of his high scoring games aren’t due to the offense, but instead the defense/ST getting points or at least setting the offense up with short fields.
Even in his best offensive years, his offense is fairly pedestrian.

Even the Ravens, who are Utah’s NFL mirror…their offense didn’t take off until they started getting the ball to their receivers. They tried for years to run the ball and feature the TE…
You can’t win it all that way.
You have to be able to score quickly to be elite. And not rely of the defense to set it up. You need to be able to get the ball with 80 yards to go, and quickly move the ball up field and score TD’s.
And Whitt can’t do that.

Not coincidentally, the first 3 games of that losing streak were after Huntley got injured and Troy Williams couldn’t run the quick passing game at the same level.

The offense has been frustrating at best this year and last year but at the end of the day most college football fans would have loved to have Whitt as their teams coach for the last 20 years. I am grateful for what he has done but hope he stays true to what he said about a simplified offense to keep up with the changing world of college football.
