A lot has been said about and NIL for BYU (MBB specifically). Some unsolicited thoughts and actual information from a BYU fan:
– Ryan isn’t putting up all or even most of the money for MBB. He has, however, gotten long dormant wealthy families engaged in BYU athletics in a major way for the first time ever. (Trust me on this). He actually didn’t even put up close to half of what NIL covered for AJ.
– AJ’s total comp is around $7M, but the VAST majority of that is from Red Bull and Nike. He’s going to be on commercials long before he even enrolls at BYU next Fall. BYU met what KU and UNC offered, but didn’t exceed it. And it was FAR LESS than half of his total compensation (again, most of which comes from Nike and Red Bull)
– It’s odd to the BYU fanbase that Utah fans seem so annoyed by the NIL amounts and Ryan Smith specifically. BYU has historically and infamously been insanely cheap (there are famous stories of equipment guys not giving players new socks when they needed them and cutting corners on travel etc.), while–at least in our minds–Utah has the old-money East bench big donors. So in the mind of a BYU fan, the new BYU-centric tech money simply levels the playing field with Utah in what has long been an unbalanced situation.
– Big 12 money – Keep in mind BYU was languishing in Independence for a decade+ while Utah was raking in money from the PAC 12 (though that doesn’t seem all that substantial looking back). And all the while managed to run a profitable AD. So new Big 12 money is a boon to existing programs and facilities. And we’ll certainly notice that increase more than you all will.
– Taxpayers – Due to the Olympics and state-funded improvements, RES and other facilities get upgrades unrelated to the typical AD funding. (Probably mostly and only true in the case of the Olympics and RES). Whereas BYU has to raise money for all that stuff. Another reason we feel this ‘new money’ is simply leveling the playing field. Said another way: if BYU wants to upgrade LES, there will be a major fundraising drive. If Utah wants to upgrade RES, the Olympic committee does it before 2034.
– Ute fans seemed to love NIL when everyone got a pickup from Ken Garff. But now when BYU is spending to get blue chip basketball recruits, suddenly every Utah fan in my life is annoyed at BYU’s NIL success.
– As an aside…it’s interesting that BYU’s donor base and NIL spending has NOT yet transferred into football. There are 8ish very very wealthy families that are pouring major resources into basketball, but not yet football. I have theories as to why this is the case.

what’s the point of even posting this on a Utes website?
Are you trying to convert us?-

Take this s**tpost to cougarboard. This didn’t need its own thread. It was discussed thoroughly already in previous threads on the subject with people pointing out that it was perfectly legal in the wild west of NIL and the NCAA. The argument was whether it was private donors or not, it’s a bad look for a religious institution to engage in what’s essentially pay to play.
-
HATUmanParticipant
It shouldn’t seem odd, we’re jealous that we don’t have many billionaire donors and it’s holding us back from filling out our roster with top shelf talent. It’s really that simple.

How many points has he averaged in college so far??
Has he even step on the court for byu yet???
Seems like a lot of excitement for someone who hasn’t done anything yet.
He’s a year before he even reports to byu. A lot can happen between now and then.
Let’s talk in 18 months

I don’t disagree with most of what you said but I have to say TITHING DOES NOT DIRECTLY FUND BYUS NIL OR ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT! Please stop pretending like it does, it benefits the school but not athletics directly. Whether or not it upsets just admit byu has big fans who actually do help support their athletic department. But yes a lot of what you said is valid just don’t try to twist it to make it seem byu is 100% hypocrites. The hypocrisy only ever comes from a small section of fans.
-
UtahParticipant
BYU is the mormon church’s biggest expense. If you think tithing doesn’t indirectly fund BYU…again…believe what you want.
-
Rick WalkerParticipant
Tithing funds BYU the school, not the athletic department. Hence why byu should hope athletics and academics become completely separate for all schools and players are employed. It would benefit them

The BYU fan’s comments were lame and uncalled for.
You clearly have very strong opinions about the church and economics/politics (and I have no problem w/ that).
I am an active member of the church and a diehard Ute (that hopes BYU loses every game in every sport)…as is Taylor Randall, Kyle Whittingham, Morgan Scalley, a bunch of our players, a bunch of our donors (including many of the top ones), and I would guess 35-45% of our fanbase too.
I believe you said a number of things about the church that are either misleading or just not true. And while I don’t share your opinions, that’s okay b/c what brings us together on this website is Utah Athletics. So I think we should keep the discussion on here to college sports and leave religion, politics, etc. out of it. I’d be happy to have a discussion with you (or anyone else) about the church someplace else. Genuinely, I’d love to learn more about your perspective and also have the opportunity to share mine too (and to do so with purely the intent to seek and share understanding).

How would you (and the rest of the BYU fan base) feel if we all got on Cougarboard and said stuff like this? In a passive aggressive way, you’re essentially rubbing this in our faces on our own website. Totally low class.

We would get banned from Cougarboard for a similar post. Those people are soft.

For starters, Ryan Smith is absolutely leading and funding this, so we know you’re full of s**t.
2nd – you’re a private school, so cry all you want about the flagship university getting Olympic funds to host on behalf of the state. That’s how it should work.
Only good thing about this, is just like your fake championship that caused the creation of the BCS, we will probably see some real action taken now that a player who
Would never consider your trash school, is going there, because it’s the clearest example of pay-to-play.-
AlohaUteParticipant
This is an unhinged comment. You think this is the most egregious and first major pay-to-play recruit? What world have you been living in for then last 3-4 years?
-
Central Coast UteParticipant
He didn’t say it was the first pay to play. He said this kid would have never considered byu before. He’s then likening it to 1984 and the changes that were made to CFB and he’s speculating there will now be changes made again because of byu.

“We can never become a place where the culture is pay to play. We would undermine everything at BYU if that wins out. It’s tempting (but) if they don’t fit the mission, we’d unravel everything.” Commissioner of Church Education Elder Clark Gilbert
Spin it however you want and whatever makes you feel better but it’s absolutely hypocritical and talking out of both sides of mouth.

BYUFAN: I appreciate the additional insights. Congrats on landing the #1 recruit. That is huge. With all the support, hires, and recruits BYU has had recently, I fully expect BYU basketball to be a national powerhouse.
To answer your questions: it’s been said a few times already, we’re not angry as much as we are jealous. We would love to have what you’ve got going on. Although Elder’s Gilbert’s comments about pay to play was not a good look, as BYU is absolutely participating in pay to play the same as everyone else (and it comes off as holier than thou to pretend you’re not).
And, of course Utah has some advantages in being a state institution. BYU has some advantages in being a private institution too. But it’s not a great look to come to a rivals fan board to complain about said advantages and disadvantages.

Didn’t you make this exact same post like a month ago, word for word? And the first time it was received pretty well because for the most part, this forum is made up of very rational people. But then you make the same exact post again. No need to re-hash and rub it in our face. Gtfo
