Interesting, I wondered why the job didn’t go to Wilcox given he’s a former Oregon player who everyone thought wanted to come home.

Sounds like Oregon wanted Wilcox after all but maybe the pressure to win there was unappealing or the offer wasn’t high enough for him to want to take on all of that pressure. Thanks for posting this!

Nothing screens big time like having custom T-shirts made in your honor.

“Per the report, Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens told Wilcox that the school was ready to build a big marketing campaign around Wilcox. The plan was to have printed t-shirts available when Wilcox was brought on at his introductory conference.”

If that is their idea of a marketing plan I think it is obvious why they’re not able to keep their coaches very long.

A lot more to it of course. Wilcox makes plenty of cash and works under relatively realistic expectations from Cal leadership. Oregon job is essentially signing up to be a Nike employee. That entire scene as beautiful and financially fruitful as it all looks on the surface has to get stressfully old. No coincidence coaches turnover at Oregon every several years. Oregon football is one of Uncle Phil’s pet projects and you damn well better make him look good with frequent trips to the NC. Getting blown out by Utah twice in less than two weeks does not comply with the Nike employee handbook. Five coaches in the past 13 years is not continuity.

No way the new Southern dude from Georgia with zero HC experience lasts more than three years. We have a good thing going at Utah. Go Utes!
