ParticipantMoving to the Big12 has been the clear choice ever since CU bolted. Let’s just hope it’s not too late. Utah’s inaction in all this has been awful. If they are relegated to the MountainPac conference, then it will be entirely their fault for not being proactive.
Not happy with how my alma mater has handled this.

ParticipantI’d like to know how you know that the school administration didn’t act behind the scenes. All this talk of “inaction” is entirely twitter driven speculation. I’m so sick of it.

ParticipantThey have been acting behind the scenes. Utah fans just like to fret

ParticipantBecause they should have left immediately after CU did. It was so painfully obvious at that point what the end result was going to be.
If the Big12 invites us, they will probably offer a reduced share of Big12 media money because we are desperate now.
The school just screwed themselves.

ParticipantTo be fair, they can’t give us a discounted share. It’s in their media contract that any P5 member they bring in gets full share

ParticipantPro rata is only for the ESPN share. Fox didn’t have the pro rata clause. Earlier reports by Thamel indicated the league would have to “stretch and work with media partners” to make additions to 16 work, but that it would be achievable.
Why would they offer that now? Fox has no incentive to offer pro rata because they know the teams will come over for cheap now out of desperation.
CU was smart. They saw the writing on the wall, and bolted early.

ParticipantDon’t say “To be fair,” UteFanatic isn’t speaking fairly, he’s going on hyperbolic rants. Be fair to Utah’s administration. They knew full well that the B12 option doesn’t include partial shares. If they’re going to the B12, they’ll get the same as everyone else in that conference. There was zero reason to bolt, and every reason to wait and see if the P12 could survive. Just stop with the “inaction” thing, and calling President Randall incompetent.

ParticipantUntil Utah is firmly in the Big12 with pro rata shares, there is reason to be concerned. Period.

ParticipantAlso to add, CO leaving wasn’t what killed the PAC, it was the B1G finally adding Oregon and Washington, if they stayed then with everything we know then AZ schools stay and Utah stays.
The PAC losing is 4 biggest and most desirable schools , who are bigger and more desirable then any remaining BIG12 schools, that killed the conference.
It is also why it was more desirable, in the short 3 to 5yr, window, to remain connected to Oregon, Washington, instead of jumping early.
There was no long term harm in waiting IMO.

ParticipantIt’s prudent to wait and see. Apple apparently offered more money to the PAC which after a couple of year would be more than the B12. UO and UW leaving probably change that though.

ParticipantWell, it appears we are “showing interest” per McMurphy
Arizona State & Utah "showing interest" in the Big 12, sources told @ActionNetwork. Arizona has already applied for Big 12 membership, but Big 12 now "exploring its options" following news of Oregon & Washington leaving for Big Ten

ParticipantI’d like that tweet a whole lot better if it said “Utah has applied for Big12 membership”. Lol.

ParticipantI’d be more confident with Chris Hill at AD in this critical period than Mark Harlan.

ParticipantWhile it’s always good to have solid leadership at every level during times like this, remember that Harlan is not a decision maker here. Realignment decisions are made by the school president (Taylor Randall) and his board.
Is Harlan talking to Randall? Of course. But he is an advisor only.
-
Yergensen
ParticipantNonsense, we’ve been over this before. Hill was just as instrumental if not more than President for getting us into P5. Hill was a transformer and change agent. From my perspective Harlan is a sustainer. You don’t want a sustainer leading athletics in major realignment.
