For those interested, the PLL is holding their shortened season and playoffs here in Utah in a COVID-19 quaranteened “island.” The Archers have three players from the Ute Lacrosse Team coaching staff (Marcus Holman, Will Manny, and Adam Ghitelman).

The Archers went 3-1 in the shortened regular season (“group play”) and won their first game in the single elimination tournament last night.

They play in the semifinals tomorrow night (6PM MT) on NBC Networks.

As a follow-up, here are some stats from the Ute coaches through five games:

Will Manny (attack) 9 Goals (#5 in PLL), 4 Assists (#9 in PLL) -> 13 points (#10 in PLL)

Marcus Holman (attack) 3 Goals, 1 Assist

Adam Ghitelman (goalie) 26 Saves; 17 Goals given up -> 60% Save percentage (#3 in PLL)

As a huge lacrosse fan, I’ve been following this tournament.  We are very fortunate to have BOTH Holmans (father & son), Manny, and Ghitelman on our staff.  They’re fantastic players, coaches, and recruiters.  And seeing as how they’re all on the same team, it’s easy to root for the Archers.

That said, I wonder how much longer the PLL plans on being some “traveling circus” group.  Since they’re aiming to one-up the MLL with better compensation packages, they’ll ultimately have to settle down in a city.  My current assumption is that rather than establishing a team in a city first, they’re looking to establish a fanbase before they set down roots, to determine which cities would be the most ripe for planting.  In MLL, the Philadelphia Barrage were actually transplants from Bridgeport, CT, where they’d played their first 3 seasons prior to moving.  PHL then proceeded to win back-to-back national championships in ’06 and ’07…

…and then moved…to nowhere in particular, as they were seeking another Home base.  Philadelphia finally resurrected our shuttered team in 2020.  Perhaps the PLL is looking to avoid the expense of all the moving.

Are these pll teams based out of cities or is it like a traveling showcase league?

At present, there are no Home cities for the PLL.
