Do you think there’s a good chance Jay Hill would move to Utah once Scalley is promoted to head coach? Do you think Scalley would even want him on his staff? I’m assuming that if Kalani is still the head coach and Jay Hill is still the DC, Hill might want to move on to Utah, given his strong ties to the program.

The Utes would love to have Jay Hill, but I am quite sure that it won’t happen.

First – I am not sure if Hill would want to work for Scalley, not because they dislike each other. I just think that it would be awkward for Hill to coach under Scalley. When Scalley becomes head coach – he will need to be the guy in charge. (It will be his team and his defense.) Thus, I think Shah will become the D coordinator.

Second – I think Hill is the apparent future head coach for BYU. BYU doesn’t have a lot of options and I think Sitake is on the hot seat. I think Scalley will be the head coach for Utah for a very long time. If he is successful, he will stay until he retires.

Scalley needs to have the freedom to pick his own guys (guys he feels comfortable with). He may choose to keep some of the staff, but I would not be surprised to see him replace 4 or 5 coaches.

I think there is a strong possibility. Jay Hill brings history, experience, stability. However there are so many defensive coaches that have played at Utah or coached at Utah that are coaching currently. Jay Hill is at or near the top of that list most definitely.

Just one person to highlight on the current staff is Colton Swann as DC. He has done an outstanding job with the LBs for the last 6 years. He has recruited hard and made LBs a position of strength for the UTES. Prior to Utah served many years at Weber as LBs and or DC. Then I say we bring on Trevor Reilly to be the LB coach.

Maybe. He’d be co-DC with Shah, because Shah will be our DC when Whitt retires.

      Here’s what I think happens:

Shah and Swan are Co-DC’s. Jay Hill is Utah State’s HC and turns them into the next Boise St. Or Hill goes and is a HC somewhere like SDSU or Fresno St or something.

I really don’t think Shah wants to be DC. I think he likes being CB/special teams.

Honestly…I’d love it. Jay Hill and Swan as DC and Shah as CB coach? Holy moly, yes please.

I don’t know what Hill would do but IF Kalani is still the HC at Utah, but isn’t doing great, I think it would be smart to join Scalley and Co at Utah and wait for Kalani to get fired or another HC job to open up. He could do that at Utah, but he would risk getting dragged down by the rest of TSPP football. Of course, you could also argue that staying at TSPP is a less risky job for him because Kalani has several years of HC experience, and Scalley would be brand new.

For me, without knowing which culture or coaching style he would prefer, teaming up with Scalley at Utah with Scalley would be the better career choice… but I don’t pretend to be any kind of expert or even knowledgeable on the subject. I have uninformed opinions, so take them for what they are worth.
