I’m still not sure we have the powerback/short yardage guy that we need. Thoughts?

How could we be sure? We haven’t seen this team play in a real game yet. If anyone said they were sure, they would be a liar or suffering from delusional thinking.

The brief time we saw the players yesterday left me more impressed with the WR room than the RB room. I’d be portaling for a talented RB. Utes may not have NIL to get Martinez, but he fits the mold.

I thought they tried Miki Suguturaga once or twice last year on short yardage or goal line offense. I agree that there wasn’t anyone of the RBs that would be considered a strong short yardage guy, so if they can’t get someone in the portal, then maybe try one of the TE like Miki or Kuithe.

Currently, no power back. Third and short may see plays to the edge with TEs involved with the ball or blocking. If the box spreads out, QB sneak. I prefer access to a big back but there are other things in the workaround plan. Ball control is more difficult. A QB that does not hesitate can throw on 3rd and short.

I guess that I’m more positive than many on the board about Mitchell. I don’t think we saw near enough from him Saturday to sit in judgement. Reports I’ve received from practice are quite positive. To my eyes, there were no holes to hit yesterday on his runs. He still managed to follow blockers who got a strong push twice for first downs.

Anyway, getting a sure thing in the portal would be nice but I think running back by committee can work for this team given the talent level everywhere else.

It would have been nice to see what Woods can do. I don’t think he’ll be back from the ACL injury for fall ball. I don’t think he arrived with a fully torn ACL so I don’t know the surgical approach – if any. Perhaps someone else knows more about this than I do. Coach Whittingham hasn’t declared him out for the season but he’s also not talking about him. I know that he did not participate in spring at all. Perhaps that’s why it’s radio silence.

I had no idea that Woods had a knee injury. He was supposed to be the big portal addition at the RB position. It would really suck if he couldn’t contribute this season.

I’ll be interested to see if the RB’s will improve with a more dangerous throw game. Hopefully, they will see less stacked boxes.
