Whit from today on the QB2 battle: “It’s a dead heat,” Whittingham declared. “I would say it’s as dead of heat as it could be right now, but they’re both getting better, which is key.”

      Dead heat

For anyone following, the battle has moved from neck and neck last week to dead heat, deadest of heats. Looks like another QB battle going down to the wire.

People realize this is just coach speak right? It means literally nothing.

I think Whitt is just saying what he thinks is best for the team. These statements from him don’t mean anything. I know, I’m stating the obvious.

What do we expect him to say though? “yeah, that kid from last year… he sucks just like the rest of the QBs that played last year. The new kid this year might be good, but he’s a scrawny freshman who is waiting on the right guy to die a tragic death so our guy can keep living the dream. In other words, if Cam gets hurt, which we all know he will, we are up s**t creek.”

Going to spring practices and watching the players play…some of my best memories with my wife and kids.

      It’s a shame.

Translation: “I want to make sure neither of them transfers before the season starts.”

Either that or one of two other things. He doesn’t want to give anyone anything to talk about that might distract the team. Or he doesn’t care enough to think about it and is just answering because he has to.

Can anyone translate Whitt speak? I believe dead heat means they both have a lot of work to do

Goodness, Whitt wants to completely encourage the next 3 or 4 QBs behind Rising. There is zero benefit and a mountain of problems is Whitt was to give you a report this early in the competition for QB2. His focus is getting as many as 3 QBs ready to go next fall and the carrot is the QB2 position. I expect in the next portal window he will look for the best available QB that can exceed his pick for QB3. It is a fan question but you would learn more being around a middle school or high school football team if you want to learn about team dynamics.

Could you imagine him saying what he probably really thinks? I have a QB1 and the only reason we will have a QB2 is because we can’t have 3 QB3s, haha. He’d love to have 3, 4 deep that he’s confident in, but it’s like most schools, you probably have confidence in 1.75 QBs (hoping for 2.5 …). Sounds like Rose has great talent but isn’t as fast picking up the system and reads. Isaac is just a frosh (and has his knee that has to get fixed at some point), so I’m sure he has some tweaks to work on as well as learn the system. Bottari is a great QB4 ;).

You must have 2 QBs ready to go in the season, of course one will be better than the second. We have no idea how far along Rose is currently. The fact that he has not been mentioned by Whitt as QB2 means nothing to me for the reasons above. The spring game will be the first hint as to where he is but I expect the ‘competition’ to go thru the first half of fall camp. As for Wilson, most freshmen work their way up on a team with a very good QB room. The QB at Az last year is uncommon. Whitt does prefer that a new QB (not proven like Rising) take hits in practice so that is not first experienced in a game. Wilson needs to learn the offense and be healthy enough to take contact in practice to overtake Rose, I believe. With Rising in the picture, I think the QBs realize the competition takes place again a year from now. If Rising gets hurt and Wilson is healthy, then it all gets to be important who steps into QB1. Bottari probably runs the scout team but Whitt would prefer to give that job someone that will work their way into games someday if possible. There is a possible portal QB that will be shoehorned in somewhere, with Rising here it needs to be someone with more than 1 year eligibility.
