My father imparted a few life lessons to me, as all parents attempt to do. He told me once that if you want to keep your friends, particularly in a business environment, never talk politics or religion. He went on to say that each of us are hardwired to a large extent. We are how God made us. We are not particularly open to new ideas, looking more often than not for confirmation and not learning. So, he offered, it is best to keep your heartfelt opinions to yourself, unless it is to defend those who absolutely require it.
I don’t always live to this ideal, and sometimes take his final thought as an opportunity to persuade others. Or as they would say, to save them from their own ignorance. In some cases, I do think that is important, even though I have learned that you can only lead a horse to water, not make them drink it.
Some posts over the last few days have shocked me in the level of condescension, dismissiveness, arrogance, ignorance and savagery. I’d like to believe we could all benefit from dialogue, having leaned in negotiations that no deal comes from fixed positions. What I read on these pages by a few is dogma in the extreme and a close-mindedness that is discouraging. I confess I understand the wisdom in my father’s admonition. If I also am guilty of these faults (and they are faults), please accept my apologies.
For my part, I will think twice, if not three times before engaging in what is clearly a fruitless exercise in exchanging views on politics here.

I think when we start banning people from this country based on religion, you need to speak up.
What is going on is horrible.

Meh. Branch Davidians were “banned” by burning, and they were a religion. Religions are just sets of ideas and not all ideas are compatible. For example, if a group believes that their god commands them to kill or enslave others who do not convert to their group, that’s not a very good idea in my opinion. Another example of a bad idea would be that women should be killed if they get raped. Another bad idea is that the law for everyone should be the religious law. Separation of church and state was a huge victory for our ancestors after arguably over 1,000 years of oppression. I’m not in favor of the idea that the church should be the state.
Now I don’t know which numbers are trustworthy as to what percentages of Muslims subscribe to those ideas, but the ones put out there by Pew are pretty high. Too high. But that they are ideas in the set of ideas within Islam, that part isn’t really debated as far as I know.
We ban bad ideas (and their resultant behavior) all the time in our society. We ban murder. We ban theft. We ban speeding and drunk driving and hard drug use and etc etc etc. Overall, people don’t agree with those ideas here. If there’s a group of people who believed in stealing and murdering and driving drunk and they called it a religion, it would not be allowed because of all the incompatible ideas it held.
I think the 16 year old wars are worse, and America should get out of it. What are we even doing over there? Seems like a scammy setup.
Also, isn’t this “ban” only 90 days while they try to sort things out?
