Those are some whacky power rankings.

On Saturday, I was sitting next to a couple who live in San Diego and travel to every Utah game. We spoke briefly about Utah’s post season opportunities while we did not touch on the CFP. On the Rose Bowl, the women in the couple made a startling and surprising comment. She said on that prospect, “They won’t let Utah into the Rose Bowl, they just won’t.” We elected not to respond, just said, “…that’s interesting”.
The comment reveals some interesting thoughts that are also surfacing in the CFP realm. Here is a select catalog of those thoughts.
Utah is not a storied program, not like Alabama or Ohio State or Oklahoma.
Utah will not be a good TV draw.
Utah does not have any quality wins.
Utah does not have the best athletes and will be over matched.
We know the drill. Case in point: if you listened closely to the FOX broadcast on Saturday several versions of these made-up issues did surface. Once the stunned crew got over how powerful Utah was, the SoS creep out as Urban Meyer was making a broader case for the Utes. On the next break, someone pointed out that Ohio State did not have that good of a SoS. And so it goes. We can see the jockeying now to dismiss Utah and build up the “historic” progams. For that reason, a few weeks ago, I stated that I was over the entire CFP discussion. It interferes with my enjoyment of this rare season. We have two more games to watch in the regular season. On the spur of the moment we decided to come to SLC to see the Utah trashing of the Bruins. Awesome and we had a great time at 61Shasta’s et al. tailgate. Now we are headed to Tuscon for the Arizona game. Utah is going to make a statement in that game, I’m betting. Utah finishes the season at home for Senior Day against lowly Colorado. There will be no repeat of 2011.
If Utah or Oregon—assuming one is 12-1—does not make the CFP, the gnashing of teeth will likely lead to an expansion of the CFP the next day. I don’t want two SEC teams in the CFP, its boring, and for all the reasons savvy sportscasters are now beginning to let loose, its wrong. We need regional diversity for the strength of the playoff.
I believe Utah goes 12-1. I believe Utah has yet to peak. I believe Utah will win convincingly at Arizona and against Colorado. I think Utah beats Oregon in an impressive showing.
I think Utah goes to the CFP. But I’m not going to think about it anymore, because the Wildcats are up next.
As Zach “the Mack” Moss said, “It’s not about the team we’re going against, It’s about us.”

Great post!
I have been one of the ones not even considering the CFP. It is just too exclusive and for all the reasons you have said I know Utah will be left out.
I listened a little more and have watched a few of the top teams. This Utah team deserves a shot! It was so dominant. fUCLA had everything to gain Saturday. They were a hot team but slowly got choked out. That is a quality win in my mind.
I caught myself looking at other teams schedules. This weekend sort of spun into the P12’s favor. I just wish Oregon was undefeated and had closed out Auburn. Just like Utah closing on those SC wideouts better or held onto the ball to close the half. Or Moss not getting hurt.
I find myself cheering for chaos. I want Ohio state to lose to Pedo State even. Just cause all these little resume problems to force a 6 team playoff!! You get enough one loss teams you stop these silly well this loss is uglier than this loss and this win had more style points garbage.
As far as the denying Utah the Rose Bowl. If Utah wins out and is the P12 champion the Rose Bowl is the worst we can do by contract. So f**k those people. I was in a very jovial MUSS mood and most definitely would have spouted off to their ignorance Saturday. Z
Brand is stupid. Give me quality matchups with Champions of a conference. The game within a game of closing out your Conference season matters. Something Utah hasn’t done and must do. No way USC loses the rest of the way. I also don’t see Utah losing. They are too good. This defense is basically future NFL players.

I also think Utah deserves a shot. That said, given the current 4-team CFP arrangement, as of today, how to appraise and select the top four teams? How do we get Utah ahead of LSU, OSU, Georgia, and Clemson? The first three have beaten ranked teams — Georgia has beaten multiple. Sure, Alabama’s and Clemson’s SOS is not great, nor is that of Utah. I haven’t even mentioned OU and PSU. How do people adopt and maintain an objective appraisal? It’s nearly impossible. The next two weeks will settle things a bit.
I think CFP should go to 8 — it’s the only way, well, at least the best way.

Isn’t it likely that LSU will play Georgia in the SEC championship? If Georgia wins the SEC, we’re out. IF they lose, it’s a maybe.

Yes. Hence, I wrote “as of today” and “next two weeks will settle things a bit”.

Interesting post. I think most of us know this instinctively. I just want the Utes to get the the Rose Bowl. IF something else happens… I’ll celebrate then.

one has to wonder if that sort of conversation goes on among the league and its refs?

I don’t care where we go, as long as there are tire marks up the front of whoever plays us. This year has been a joy to be a fan.
