2008 National Champ
ParticipantDefensive link isn’t working for me

ParticipantGot it working I think again.

ParticipantWorking now and the charts match perception. The Colorado and Iowa State games hurt Utah’s overall defensive rankings but on a pure by play analysis, that was a top level defense we watched in 2024. With even a competent offense we’d be talking about it being one Utah’s best ever instead of thinking that the defense could/should have done just that little bit extra to win more games.

ParticipantYeah, I was irked by Whitt’s comments that the defense failed to get stops at end of games like they needed or expected. F that Noise.
This chart shows exactly what we all thought. This isn’t on the defense. It is 100% on the offense and some extent, special teams.
1/3 of the program showed up this season.
PS: the offense link doesn’t work for me.

ParticipantThe offensive chart had Utah in the lower left. There were only 6 teams worse on both axes (axesses? axis?). The word is pronounced ack-cees but it doesn’t look right when I type it. No matter how it’s spelled it was putrid and the chart backs it up.

ParticipantSo, we had a championship worthy defense and an offense worthy of program relegation or shuttering.
What a season!!! I’m going to go cry now…

ParticipantIt’s “axis”.
And thanks for posting this, I saw it lost night and was looking for somewhere to post it.
I mean, most recognized how much the defense was at a disadvantage. But you’d still see hate and disrespect towards the defense, and this shows just how much we may have not even appreciated the D as much as we should have.
It wasn’t perfect and could’ve created more TOs and couldn’t potentially gotten that “1 more stop” and who knows, with a better offense it could’ve had enough energy or momentum to get that.

ParticipantThis tells me that all we needed was a middle of the road offense to be CFP caliber. Thinking about each loss, this checks out. With a 2021/22 offense, we’re 13-0 and #2 in the final ranking. Just like most that know the program were expecting.

Extra Medium
ParticipantWe would have been 11-1 with a average offense.

ParticipantFive games where the offense had one single TD (in one of them a pick-6 and a TD on a blocked punt wasn’t enough for a win, another was against a TCU team that gave up 66 points to their twin-cities rival SMU).
