Come on, that’s the best name you could come up with the replace the Indians? At least they won’t be known as the Cleveland Baseball Team similar to some NFL team we know.
This has been hashed, rehashed and overhased many times. The name Utes is not a pejorative term like Indians or Redskins, terms native americans find offensive and were never used by the indiginous tribes when describing their members. The teams use of the Utes name will only go away when the UTE tribe decides it needs to go away.
The change was inspired by the “Guardians of Traffic” statues on the Hope Memorial Bridge, which carries State Route 10 over the Cuyahoga River near the team’s home of Progressive Field in Downtown Cleveland. They are the large art deco statues that connect Cleveland’s west and east sides.
