ParticipantNot trying to be a doomsday bringer, but if UW and UO go to the Big12, there is a very real possibility that Utah will be left behind in a very watered down Pac12.
This is honestly getting a bit scary. This is not the time for hubris for Utah. This is becoming an emergency situation.

Big 12 will add b/w 1 & 3 schools to join Colorado in 2024, sources told
@ActionNetworkHQ
. League will 1st seek others from Pac-12 to join. If none do so, Big 12 would add 1 Group of 5 (UConn, Memphis, SDSU or UNLV) to reach even number of teams in 2024 -

ParticipantIt’s been widely reported the Big XII has had multiple discussions with virtually every school in the Pac-12.
We just lost a bottom 3 program to the Big XII. I’d trade San Diego, UNLV, SMU for Colorado any day. We need to get back to 10 as soon as possible even if it means paying some or all of an exit fee from the MWC.
I say go for 5 schools and get to 14. SMU, UNLV, Houston, San Diego, and Air Force.

ParticipantIf UW and UO go to the Big 12, wouldn’t that put UTAH in a better position get into the B1G when they look to expand?
With the B1G still in play for possible expansion, I’m not sure that UW and UO would jump at this point into the academic dumpster fire that is the Big 12…

ParticipantThere are many moving parts and very little information, but my thoughts are that UW/UO to the Big12 decreases Utah’s chances because there is probably only room for one more school at that point. Utah is a good option in a vacuum, but we can’t ignore the fact that they already have a team from Utah (this is one of the reasons BYU wasn’t a realistic Pac12 expansion candidate after Utah joined). Instead, the Big12 will likely want to grab a school from Arizona to gain a new market.
You are right, though, about UW/UO not wanting to lock themselves into a conference if the B1G is a possibility. They would have to sign onto a 99 year GOR and would be required to pay an $80M exit fee if the B1G came calling. Of course, the Big12 could grant them a sweetheart exit clause, but that seems to run counter to Yormark’s vision of a post-TX/OU Big12 conference of not favoring certain schools.
There is an aspect that helps Utah. The Holy War. It’s no secret that TV execs LOVE rivalries. I’m not sure if it’s enough to prioritize Utah over an AZ school, but the rivalry is a plus considering the Big12 is fairly bereft of traditional CFB rivalries these days.

ParticipantThe B1G can, and will, poach Oregon and Washington from the BigXII just as easily as they could from the Pac. Those schools moving to the BigXII doesn’t do anything for Utah’s B1G chances.

ParticipantThr rumor is UO isn’t a great cultural fit for the B1G and they don’t bring in enough money to make up for that. Apparently even ASU would be ahead of them. Both for market size and culture.

ParticipantMike Farrell on twitter. He has some connections to the northwest schools. I wouldn’t call him an ironclad source, but he’s certainly not a known realignment troll like Swaim and MHVer3.
#Ducks and #UDub taking to Big 12. Things move fast.

ParticipantWHY would Nike U or U-Dub even think twice about leaving for the B12 at this point? Makes zero sense to me.

ParticipantSame reason CU left. No media deal, or if there is one, it’s low and they can make more money in the Big12.

ParticipantMoney?
A TV deal that won’t have half or more of their games streaming on Apple+?
Maintaining P5 status?

ParticipantTurns out money and exposure are pretty important. Who’d have thought?
