Long time lurker, first time poster. I’ll admit I’m a Cougar fan, I mostly spend most of my time on Cougarboard, but have been spending more time on UteHub lately due to the Cougarboarders being a bunch of meanies to me due to the fact that I’m a transgender lesbian and a male feminist as well as a mod, and a huge Disney/Avengers/Star Wars superfan.

First of all I wanted to drop by and say that I’ve always admired Coach Whittingham and his excellent defenses year after year, and I’ll admit, I too am a huge fan of leather pants. I also, wanted to say that you guys owned the rivalry for years, and we’re just lucky to be finally getting on the same footing as you all, I wish we had as recent of a national championship as your 2008 one.

And while in my opinion it was indeed a hold, in the game on Saturday, it shouldn’t have been called, because that’s just big tough, smack you in the butt defense right there. I’ve personally written a letter about my opinion on this to Brett Yormark himself, as well as filed a police report.

Best of luck this week playing the real rivalry game, Colorado. I hope you win, but just don’t be too good, okay?

This stuff comes from what I’d describe as a lack of “worldliness” in Utah youth. Because the state can be very culturally monolithic there is this very odd feedback loop where nobody in the club is punished for doing things that would get you laughed at or beat up elsewhere. And as years go on,in an effort to one up itself, it gets more strange to the point of parody but without the self awareness.

It was the same when I was grade school aged. You have no idea how “small” it all really is until you get out there live some life, but many never do.

Yeah the Utah cultural can be great sometimes but absolutely terrible other times. Wayyyy too many kids never learn about consequences. Obviously some do because they have good parents who teach them but from a culture aspect many are never reprimanded, and the ones who are end up feeling worse about themselves because they’re either shamed by the same kids that are in their home ward or feel judged because they’re not lds. Just a real need for more diversity in Utah overall but that’s probably something that will never happen.

It takes at least a generation for all that new diversity to make changes to a culture. And usually those changes involving going to the exact opposite extreme that the OP is pretending to be. Religion needs to be replaced with anti-religion, strong family values need to be replaced with hedonism.,, Just once I’d like to see change incorporate the best parts of the “old” with some improvements from the “new” but what fun would that be?

Will people be jumping off the Moroni Statue in Temple Square in despair? I’m not from SLC, I just started living here five years ago when I fully retired. In fact, the only time I lived in Utah before that, was the 18 months I spent in grad school at the U a quarter century ago. And you’re right, it’s nothing compared to Miami, Atlanta, Madrid, the Bay Area, Amman, Beirut, Riyadh, Kuwait City, Rome, and a bunch of other places that I’ve spent multiple years living in, but I still like it.

The fact that you’re here just proves my point as to your immaturity.

If you read closely, I never said you were Mormon, but thank you for outing yourself. Brilliant work that…

Miami I lived in Salt Lake my whole life. We moved to Holladay in the early 60s and lived here ever since. We were the only non Mormon family in several blocks. The religion has always been strange to me but the people have been great neighbors and friends. It taught me to judge others by actions not religion. I wouldn’t change anything and I’m so lucky to grow up in such a great family friendly community and have made lifelong friends. BYU and the bubble doesn’t represent the religion and people as a whole. The bubble is the perfect name for BYU and surrounding area because it doesn’t necessarily reflect the opinions of most LDS members. I know all my zLDS friends despise BYU attitude and chose to go elsewhere for college.

Jim, thanks for your comments. That’s been my experience as well. I live in a cul-de-sac in southern Davis County where my family is the only non-Mormon/Mormon background one in the block. They are all good, thoughtful people, even the ones that went to BYU. That was pretty much my experience with LDS people until the BYU basketball game last season and this past weekend’s game. There’s an obvious dark undercurrent that doesn’t show up in everyday life unless, I guess, you’re down in the bowels of Utah County.
