How long has it been since anyone has watched BYU beat Utah soundly on both lines of scrimmage? A damn long time. Both O line and D line were soundly beat last night.
Sure Ludwig and Scalley maybe could have tried for a couple more creative play calls. But coaching isnt going to change much when both of your lines are being beaten so badly. Weve forgotten what this looks like when playing BYU
It was actually a testament to the talent on the rest of the team that this game didnt get out of hand. I saw several linebackers making excellent ankle tackles and Bernard singlehandedly tried to keep us in it
You can blame coaches for preparation and game time decisions, but you cant blame them when your lines just get physically overpowered.

Yep, and the lines of other Pac teams are better than BYU. Oregon for instance is going to beat us by three scores.

Only three? The only way we keep it within three scores against Oregon is if they pull their starters at half time.

I was counting on that.

Quick reminder that, for whatever reason, lately Utah has started its seasons poorly and picked it up later. By the time Oregon rolls around, this will be a much different (probably better) team. And who knows what trajectory Oregon will take?
At this point, no outcomes for the rest of the season would surprise me.

Its a long season. Guys get injured. Some players better grow into the starter role. Some players dont. Each matchup is different.
But this did expose us as being weaker in positions where weve taken top notch play for granted the last several years.

I put this one mostly on the coaches. Rather than kicking a field goal to tie the score at 10, the coaches make a bad decision and give up momentum which creates a nine point swing.
Plus if the players that are playing are not physical enough or talented enough isn’t that on the coaches anyway because of recruiting?

Youre absolutely right that the line play last night reflects talent and depth that obviously goes back to recruiting.
But I think the idea that in-game play calling would have changed last nights outcome is wishful thinking. Even on the 4th and 2. There is nothing to say BYU wouldnt have just marched it down the field in the same way they did after the fourth down stop. They did it all night long.
We got beat physically. Its a hard thing to accept. Weve gotten really used to outmuscling BYU.

Some of the problem was a lack of reaction from Utah. As an example, when the other team is giving you a 5 man line and then mixing in involvement of LBs, the New England Patriots would not simply continue on with their scripted plays. They would quickly adjust to some plays that take advantage of that defensive position. Likely, Utah was not prepared to make adjustments in a loud environment, possibly the play call came too late to line up and make that adjustment, possibly Brewer may not yet be allowed to change plays. As a result, many times Utah had trubble lining up and then running a play that was not a good choice given how the defense is lined up.
The Y was very aggressive and knew they needed to upset the common game plan. They had nothing to loose. Utah had a plan and seemed to be sticking to it, had everything to loose. Sometimes better execution is not the only answer, sometimes only adjustments will change what is happening.
The Y did a masterful job of keeping their weakness, their secondary, out of the game. They also did a very good job making their strength, the line of scrimmage, the focus of the game even if they needed to throw extra bodies into the mix. Utah was not prepared to adjust and often players had hopeless assignments. They also had their own mistakes mixed in.

Absolutely right. Going for it on that 4th and 2 not only took 3 points off the board for us, but gave BYU a completely unneccesary boost of momentum, that they capitalized on in a big way. It was the difference in the game, points-wise.
I hated, hated, hated that call.
