On the radio in Atlanta, Chuck Oliver, one of the prominent SEC college football “gurus” was stating that Alabama fans were essentially treating the SEC championship like their big bowl destination game, pushing up ticket prices, since it is a game they can easily attend. He expects significantly lower interest among Alabama fans in the semifinal game, and thinks the championship game would be an extremely hard sell, given that it is in the bay area, making travel difficult and expensive…so yes, even to the “big” programs, long distance travel does present attendance and ticket demand issues.
