From Monday’s USA Today article “College football Week 4 overreactions”:

Just send the Big 12 trophy to Utah

With the win at Oklahoma State in the bank and the Sunflower State contenders fading, the Utes are clearly in the driver’s seat in their new conference at this early juncture. The remainder of their schedule looks quite manageable with only a couple of potential obstacles.

Most fans in the Beehive State probably have Nov. 9 circled on the calendar already, when the Utes will renew acquaintances with old rival Brigham Young. The Cougars, off to a 4-0 start themselves coming off a surprisingly one-sided victory against Kansas State, have just added another level of intrigue to the coming reunion. Utah will then have to tangle with a resurgent Iowa State a couple weeks later. Other X-factors could emerge, but Utah is the clear favorite. How the Utes handle wearing the big target will be a major storyline to follow the rest of the way.

We just have to ignore this kind of talk, and keep playing with a chip on our shoulder. Use Gundy’s press conference as bulletin board material. How we play good sound football, but not overly talented… How they gave the game away…. Remind the team what happened against AZ last year and the late td to add insult to injury. My point, don’t let the team buy into any of this hype. Knowing Whit, he won’t let them.

Honestly, I would sit the team down and have them watch last year’s AZ game in its entirety. If that doesn’t motivate them, what will?

I think we’d all be stunned if the team isn’t fired up for Arizona and playing with an extra chip on their shoulder.

#1 It was tongue in cheek. Hence “College Football week 4 overreactions.”
#2 “We” don’t have to ignore anything, we are fans, and “we” can enjoy the fluffing with impunity. “We” ain’t gonna take a rep or attend a practice this season.

It’s the same type of thing that makes it to the players’ ears and eyes all the time and has no real benefit for them, honestly. Too many teams have bought into their own hype only to be humbled. Again, whether it’s meant to be tongue in cheek or not, I hope the players are ignoring such things.

I didn’t down vote you, but I would advise that you enjoy the ride as a fan. If it isn’t fun when its good then what is the point. Not vicariously enjoying the teams success defeats the whole purpose of the exercise.

I’m enjoying the ride. I just caution against the team actually buying into their own hype more than anything. We’ve seen what happens when teams do that.

Exactly, Hellhound152 – Article is intended to be a weekly tongue in cheek recap of the previous weekend’s CFB results but still nice to see the national media taking note of the Utes!

It’s hard to believe all these media are just handing the trophy to Utah. It’s a long season. It’s just click bait I guess.

I mean…we are just better than any other Big 12 team.

As long as we show up and play Utah football, there isn’t a Big 12 team that can beat us.

All the team needs to do is focus and just take it one game at a time and not let the media’s recognition of the program get to their heads! I wouldn’t pay attention to the ESPN Sports Center highlights, just focus on kicking every team’s ass with every weekend that goes by and play solid Utah Football! Go UTES!
