Did others notice the great change in the Utes defensive pressure in the second half of the St. Marys game?
After a poor first half where they fell behind by double digits, the Utes came out with a very active defense that featured Caleb Lohner double teaming at times and providing great effort all over the court. Something lit a fire under the Utes and they played their best defensive game in a long time.
Lohner is a great athlete at his size and will provide some muscle on both defense and offense that Utah has sorely needed for a long time. Helps ease the loss of Keita. I would predict Lohner will contribute to the basketball team this season, and could have a breakout season in football next year.
For some reason Smith has recruited guys like Keller, whahlin, Lovering, that are not great scorers. But what they do have is good mobility, especially Whahlin. Smith can run guys in and out and keep a fresh team to play very active defense.
It is really nice to see Hunter Erickson’s improve play and consistency in scoring. He will help the team a lot if he can keep it up.
Utah can be very competitive at home in the Big12, and if scoring improves, steal some away games. At the minimum, this year I am looking forward to watching games, rather than assuming we are going to lose, just by how much. Utah is a defensive team. Something we couldn’t say in several years.
