In case anyone is interested.

My only takeaway is Yeti was the flat brims choice (UHC logo looks suspiciously like a yeti logo…) My vote was black diamonds.
-
Rick WalkerParticipant
Black diamonds was easily the best name ever mentioned for the team. But that might just be the ski bias talking

I prefer the Hockey Club logo far and away

Yeah, me too…and I’m voting that way tomorrow…it’s also a way to stick it to Yeti LLC legally. The official name will be UHC but the unofficial name, and the one that all fans will use, will be Yetis. Plus, all the merch will have a Yeti, the mascot will be a Yeti, etc…

I am not a trademark attorney, but I do not understand how a cooler company named Yeti can block a hockey team named Yeti. Two completely different contexts. Trademarks are not supposed to be universal in every context, especially with a non unique name. The cooler company did not invent the name “yeti” – it is the name of a mythical creature. It does not seem legally correct that a cooler company could prohibit anyone else from using that name in a different context.

I agree it makes no sense. How can there be an NFL Giants and an MLB Giants, or an NBA Kings and an NHL Kings if there can’t be an NHL Yeti and a cooler company Yeti?
-
UteanoogaParticipant
No kidding. Should the Sacramento Kings be able to successfully sue the King of England for trademark infringement?
If a company choses a word that is part of the pre-existing vocabulary, they should not own every possible use of that word.

It really has everything to do with merchandising. In addition to coolers, Yeti sells drinkware, tshirts, hats, camping equipment, etc…with the name “Yeti” affixed to them. These are all things that the Utah “Yeti” would like to sell to their fanbase, also with some version of Yeti branding affixed to it. In addition, the club and the company would kind of be competing in the same space, since they would be selling different versions of the same thing (drinkware, tshirts, hats, etc…). To make things worse, some of the drinkware sold by the club is made by Stanley, which is a direct competitor to Yeti. Are you seeing the complications yet?
Lastly, and this is something that Yeti calls brand dilution, what happens if the Utah “Yeti” suck forever and are associated with mediocrity and mismanagement? Yeti LLC claims that would impact its brand as well due to the closeness of the names.

I appreciate the response. Those are all decent points that show some overlap in merchandise, but I still don’t agree that a trademark can be that broad. One is primarily a professional hockey team, that happens to sell some related merchandise. The other is primarily a cooler company, that happens to sell some related merchandise.
If the cooler company can block the hockey team on that basis, it seems like an abuse of trademark law. I have a hard time believing the cooler company could ultimately prevail, if litigated. But maybe the hockey team does not think it is worth the headache, and it is just a risk adverse decision. If trademark law has actually become that broad, then it needs to be reigned in.

You answered your own question. Yeti LLC, by its response, made it known that it was willing to go to court to maintain the singularity of its trademark. Yes, it’s possible the the UHC would ultimately win, but not before a protracted, years-long, and costly court fight. And realize this, Yeti LLC has deeper pockets than the Smith Entertainment Group (SEG). At the end of the day, it would become a war of attrition played in different courts over many years. That’s why SEG decided to move in another direction. SEG still has a great chance to stick it to Yeti LLC by having a Yeti as a mascot with all that entails.

I think they said the logos would likely change. And I hope they do.
I like the Outlaws name, but that logo stinks IMO.
-
lgt4141Participant
I love the Mammoth and Yeti logos and would be happy with either name. Utah Outlaws just doesn’t roll off the tongue.
-
Red RhinoParticipant
I think they should be the Salt Lake Streamliners or Roadsters. Based off the name of the race cars that race on the salt flats. It would be a name very unique to the area but the salt flat cars also look pretty great and would make a great logo. It even sounds like something that goes with hockey, aka frozen lakes with objects racing down them.
They also are known by the name Lakesters but that sounds too similar to the Lakers.
-
Red RhinoParticipant
Streamliners doesn’t role off the tongue, so what about the Salt Lake Speedsters, Salt Lake Speed, or Utah Racers.
-
RoboUteParticipant
The color scheme isn’t doing it for me.
-
Red RhinoParticipant
AI created the logos. Ignore the color scheme and focus on the name. What do you all think of the name? I honestly don’t like the names Mammoths, HC, or Outlaws right now. I feel like they lack a true unique connection with Utah. There’s a possibility I could get this name idea in front of Ryan Smith with a connection I have.
Here is another one with the name Speedsters:

Links don’t work.

Not sure why. It works for me and seems to have worked for RoboUte.

Is it possible to add an image without adding a link?

Miami: I fixed your youtube link so it plays inline instead of being a link.
-
The Miami UteParticipant
Tony, okay, I give up. How do you do that? I’m following the directions for posting a link on the site.
-
Tony (admin)Keymaster
Aha. Yes for link you did it right. For youtube videos, you just paste the youtube URL on its own line in the text editor.
from the help section:
Post a YouTube Video
1. Copy the video URL from the URL bar of your browser
2. Paste video URL in the text editor area on its own line
3. There is no step 3

Seeing some posts on X really calling out the logos/team as being logos that can basically be created in the 25 version of EA Sports NHL’s Hockey game.
