That is an insane number. Usually 35% of the tackles is a sign of utter domination by the DL.

So…I’d be careful underestimating Utah’s defensive line.

Tell that to Athlon. Or Pace.

Northern Ill put up 211 yards on Iowa. The whole game.

Iowa does not have a HB like Moss. Or a QB like Huntley.

Northern Ill does not have a bonafide PAC-12-level player. Sutton is good, but at a P5 school, he would battle for his starting spot.

AND, Weber State has two tackles that have a shot at the NFL. So, however good NIU thinks their OL is, it isn’t as good as Weber’s. Sooooo, good luck with that.

If Utah doesn’t turn the ball over, this game will be ugly and ugly fast, which will be beautiful.

You might be underestimating Sutton. I just read somewhere that he is rated the #3 player in all of G5 football, whatever that’s worth. It will be interesting to see how he stacks up against the U defense. He’s only 235 pounds but very fast with good hands and they move him all over the field.

I think they’ll be ready for him because of Caleb Repp.  Similar type of a speed rusher only Smith doesn’t have Repp’s length.

I am also not convinced that he has Hercules Mata’afa’s strength.

That said, he is a very talented player and will be an important part of their Defensive strategy. It will be fun to see him in this game. Either he will put on a clinic and disrupt our offense, or he will get taken to school by our O line.

This is why I’m not too worried about Sutton. In the MAC, he is all world. In a P5 conference? He is still really good, but so are about 20 other DE’s.

He is short and light. I’ll take that any day of the week. Look at his production vs P5 schools:

            Year 1: no P5 schools

Year 2: BC (7-6): 5 tackles for loss, 1 sack. Neb (4-8): 4 tackles for loss, 1 sack.

Year 3: Iowa: 1 tackle for loss, 1 sack.

So, he had some good games vs poor P5 schools.

I’d bet he gets a sack and a TFL or two. That is not bad, but not game changing either. If he lines up over Barton, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Taylor run Moss right at him. Welcome him to big boy football.

“at a P5 school, he’d be battling for a starting spot”

San Jose 2-11, Brigham 4-9, Colorado 5-7, WVU 6-7, Arizona, UCLA, ASU, Oregon all 7-6. Against a bunch of mediocre teams the kid had a hell of a lot better production in two games than your boy Anae did all year.

Anae sucks. Utah sucks. Shut it down.

Ha ha. Dude, what is your problem? Again, where did I say he sucks?

p.s. I am right too. He’d be battling it out for a starting role at a P5 school. He is a smaller Caleb Repp. It doesn’t mean he sucks. Pita T always battled for a starting spot at a P5 school and is the NFL right now.

All that would make sense if we didn’t just struggle to pass protect against Weber, but we did. Pretty sure Sutton is better than them.

Honestly Weber St. is the most apt comparison we can make for NIU at this point if you’re looking exclusively at the depth chart.  Weber is actually bigger than them in some of the OL positions.  I don’t know how much that actually means, but you can make a pretty solid prediction based on the size matchup alone.  Our DT’s were in Weber’s backfield all night, and if Weber’s OL is greater than or equal to NIU, well…  It could be a long night for the Huskies.

One of Weber State’s tackles is being scouted by the NFL. Jay Hill says the other one has a shot at the NFL as well.

Weber’s OL was very, very good for a non-P5 school.

Game 1 comparisons are junk food. Both teams will improve from Game 1. We had some ragged play that should be shored up, NIU will be amped to play better & score a win at home against a P5 team. NIU is an upper tier MAC team, which means we better take them seriously, like we are playing San Diego State. If we do our job, handle our assignments and the coaches use the arsenal of options they have, we should prevail.
