Actually, this photo was taken in 1929, two years after it was built. The initial cost was $133,000 and the stadium held 20,000 fans. In 1947 they added the north endzone and 10,000 more seats. In 1972, Robert Rice donated 1 million dollars and astroturf was added. That’s when it became Rice Stadium. Later 2500 seats were added in the south endzone. In 1997 they basically demolished the stadium and increased capacity to 45,000 and renamed the stadium Rice-Eccles because of the generous donation from the Eccles family.
