In case anyone wants to do a deep dive on Bryson Barnes:

Wife had just had our first baby and I watched this game from the comfort of a hospital chair/bed – the highlights are much appreciated. Certainly didn’t remember any of it. But f**k, that game was ugly

So we’ll basically trot out that same offense against a defense that will be far better than WSU.
We won’t have Kincaid, we won’t have Kuithe, we won’t have Rising, we won’t have Thomas… Just like that game.
It will be nice to have a QB that throws to WRs. That is a plus I guess. Hopefully, Barnes does a better job with more reps. He certainly wasn’t terrible in that game.

Martin Stadium in Pullman is a tough place to play, no mistake. And that was a Wazzu team that went to Madison, Wisconsin and gave Mertz and the Badgers a loss. As to whether Florida’s defense will be far better than Wazzu, well, they certainly weren’t last year. Last year, Wazzu was the 38th-ranked defense while Florida was #87. Yes, I get that Florida putatively has better athletes and got some transfers in from the portal (some of which, like Cam Jackson played at the G5 level) but they’re working with a 30 year old, first year in Florida DC and it takes a while for all those new guys to gel as a cohesive unit. I think if Utah takes advantage of its scoring opportunities and plays mistake-free football, they have a good chance of winning this game.

Utah’s offense for the Florida game will be far better than the outfit that showed up versus Wazzu. For starters, Barnes will have prepped for the game instead of finding out 10 minutes prior that he was starting. We’ll also have an experienced JJ, a healthy Bernard, Mycah Pittman, Emery Simmons, and Mikey Matthews. That’s in addition to Vele and Parks. Lastly, we’ll also have a much more experienced and confident Thomas Yassmin. If Austin Armstrong tries to pressure Barnes and continually dial up blitzes, it could hurt Florida. I know last year that his So Miss defense gave up a number of 30+ yard plays, easily in double figures.

I think it’s well understood that coaches and players knew Barnes was playing against WSU in time to make a game plan around him. The “last minute decision” was some gamesmanship. So let’s hope either Barnes or Ludwig got a lot better during the off season.

2008 National ChampParticipant
It’s essentially the same offense as the Rose Bowl, both before and after Rising went down. No Kincaid, no Kuithe, no Thomas.,, Penn State had a top 15 defense, WSU gave up yards but not points. Florida wasn’t as good as either of those two.
Of the three, Penn State is the only one that Utah performed better than their average allowed.
Penn State: 323.5 yds, 18.2 ppg (Utah had 391 yards and 21 points)
WSU – 402.9, 22.9 (344, 21)
Florida – 411.0, 28.8 (446, 26)
