We have some inbred football histories in this fair state of ours

Jason Beck is a true blue BYU guy. Loves Bronco, who we all know hates Whit…who hates Bronco right back. Beck has followed Bronco for most of his career. Then goes to Utah as OC under Whit.

Bronco is a former BYU HC and Becks coach and mentor. Goes to Utah State as HC…on the same day his OC goes to Utah as OC.

That’s not even mentioning LaVell going from USU to ByU and Whit going from BYU to Utah, and Jay Hill going from Utah to ByU. And Kalani and ARod going from BYU to Utah to BYU. And Gary Andersen going from Utah to USU to USU again to BYU. And Riley Nelson and Hans Olsen going from USU to BYU and then Hans kids going to USU…to be coached by Bronco.

What a weird state

Seriously, does no one have loyalty, standards or boundaries anymore?

I’ve never heard of Texas/OU or UM/OSU swapping players and coaches. So perhaps this state is weird!

Or we don’t hear about it being normal.

At least half of BYU’s coaching staff has ties to Utah many of Utah’s staff has ties to BYU. Hardly anyone on Utah’s staff graduated outside of the state of Utah. That in and of itself is odd in NCAA football.

When BYU was on top of the football world, their offensive and defensive coordinators were Utah grads. Oh, and their head coach was a USU grad.

So, yeah, the Utah/BYU thing is a bit weird.

While I could be wrong, I think it could have roots in the fact that Utah is a great place to live. If you have either been raised here or just lived here for a while, a lot of people either want to stay or come back. Part of it is the pull of family, part of it is the pull of mountains, and part of it is probably a grab bag of other reasons. But I work in medicine, and I’ve seen it happen a lot that people who come here for training, tend to stay or come back if they leave. And if it’s the same for football coaches, I think this means geography trumps rivalries.

That said, I know not everyone loves living in Utah. And that’s fine with me too. Different strokes for different folks.
