If you ever want to know how your team compares with average, play Stanford and see how you do against them. I’m sad to say that after today’s result, we are below average. Or at best, playing below average basketball right now.
You see, Stanford basketball is the definition of average. That program was practically custom made for the NIT. Sure, there will be years every now and then when they’ll sneak into the NCAA’s–but they’re almost always a quick out if they do make it. And sure, every now and then they’ll have a player drafted into the NBA–typically a “hustle” type player that will play a few solid years.
But let’s not kid ourselves. Kids don’t go to play basketball at Stanford because it’s a great program with exciting potential, or for a shot at the League. They go there because they know a degree from that prestigious universitiy will come in handy when they have their office job after their eligibility expires. Their fans seem to know this about the players and are ok with it. Hence a few thousand will show up to the arena to golf clap a few nice plays made by their local team, before retiring to their homes for some evening wine and crackers.
And yes, those Stanford kids would kick our ass in the GMAT. But dammit, we should kick their ass on the hardwood EVERY TIME. Losing to Stanford is an embarassment to our program. This is the type of loss that should be printed up on a poster with the message “WE LOST TO FU%$(@g STANFORD!!!!” and stuck all around the training facilities for offseason motivation. Our program has too much history, too much potential, too much pride to be losing to the likes of fu%$(@g Stanford. Our guys need to know how embarassing this is and let it fuel them.
C’mon, Larry!! WE ARE BETTER THAN THIS. WE ARE BETTER THAN AVERAGE.
Ok…rant/pep talk over.
fu%$(@g Stanford. Sigh…

You seem to thnk that Stanford basketball has never been good? Haven’t they won a national championship in 1942 and have about 13 PAC titles on the mens side Pretty sure I watched them play Kentucky in the final four in 98 before we beat North Carolina
they aren’t Kansas Duke UNC Kentucky et al but they do have some history they aren’t very good this year but have been in years past

I know they’ve had some great eras in the past. But the current era of Stanford basketball is nothing to be afraid of. Now Oregon and Arizona are the top dogs in our conference by a long shot. Those are the teams we need to set our sights on if we are to fully revive our basketball prowess.
The fact that we’re struggling with Stanford goes to show that we have a lot of work to do.

They threw up a stat that read that we’ve lost 5 games in a row at Standford and have not won there since 1971. We should be used to losing there by now.
And yeah, I’m p**sed.

I saw that and it made me sick. That goes to show that losing to the Queens of the NIT has become accepted and tolerated. That needs to change ASAP.

We lost to them over there last year too, and yet the Utes still turned it around and won 13 conference games. The season isn’t over yet.

We just need to go deep in the NIT to get some more experience towards making a run next year.

And don’t look now, but Stanford is going toe-to-toe right now with Arizona @ Arizona.
